Why Trump won’t win the Nevada primary but will still sweep the state delegates

Former President Donald Trump won’t appear on Nevada’s 2024 GOP primary ballot, choosing to stand with the state GOP’s caucus, where delegates will be awarded. Down to a two-person race ahead of next week’s presidential nominating contest, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley will be on the primary ballot but left off the caucus.
Nevada’s dueling presidential primary system has created confusion for some GOP voters. Registered Republicans are the only voters allowed to cast a ballot in the primary or caucuses — and there are no rules against participating in both, according to the secretary of state’s office.
Nevada’s traditional caucus method was targeted by the Democratic-led legislature in 2021, when a law passed switching the election from a caucus to a primary. However, Republican Party leaders were steadfast in their commitment to move forward with a caucus, announcing in September the traditional nominating system would be held two days after the state-run primary election on Feb. 6.
The Nevada Republican Party made it clear that candidates who participate in the primary can’t participate in the caucus because the state-run primary is not approved by the state’s GOP.
