House Speaker Johnson Says Biden Doesn’t Need Bipartisan Law to Shut Down Border

It's all on Biden, says Johnson, who deemed new border bill 'dead' after pressure from Donald Trump on lawmaker allies to protect chaos so he can complain about it in his campaign

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., issued a statement Saturday saying that President Joe Biden doesn't need passage of a bipartisan border crackdown being discussed by lawmakers to shut down the southern border.

Biden said in a statement Friday that he would "shut down" an "overwhelmed" border once the current bill being negotiated is passed.

But former President Donald Trump is pressuring Republicans to block the bill so that he can continue to exploit the chaos at the border to attack Biden in his presidential campaign — a tactic that has sparked controversy even among Republicans.

Trump took credit for killing the border crackdown in a speech Saturday in Las Vegas — then complained about the border.
