'I support Hamas, you f**king Jew': US high school basketball game brought to a halt by violent antisemitism

Sporting rivalry brings out the oldest hatred on a basketball court

A barrage of antisemitic abuse hurled during a high school girls’ basketball game in New York state precipitated a walkout by the students of a Jewish school, who needed security guards to escort them to safety, the New York Post reported.

The backdrop to the ugly incident that unfolded in the NYC suburb of Yonkers is the rise in antisemitic incidents following the October 7 attacks and the subsequent war in Gaza. 

The game matched up varsity teams from The Leffell School, a private Jewish school, and the public Roosevelt High School.

The Thursday night game between The Leffell School, a private Jewish school in Hartsdale, and Roosevelt High School, a public school in Yonkers, ended early after some kids from Roosevelt shot antisemitic slurs at their opponents — including one who allegedly said “I support Hamas, you f–king Jew.”

Security guards had to escort Leffell School players off the court following the hostile contest.

On Sunday, Yonkers Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Luis Rodriquez and city Mayor Mike Spano issued a joint statement denouncing the hatred and apologizing for the vitriol the visiting team faced.

“The Yonkers Public Schools, along with the City of Yonkers, sincerely apologize to the students and community of The Leffell School for the painful and offensive comments made to their women’s basketball team during a recent game with Roosevelt High School,” the statement said.

I believe the game was cancelled later (after some more play), when the anti-Semitic team started getting too physical with their body checks, and Jewish players were getting injured.  I could be wrong about this....

Yeah, it was getting really ugly and the coach of the antisemitic team agreed to a voluntary forfeit in the 3rd period.  He and the player who got caught on video yelling the vulgar slur got booted from the team yesterday, and their principal apologized to the head of the Jewish players' school.
