Joe Biden's National Park Service under Interior Secretary Deb Haaland will remove the statue of William Penn from the park erected in 1982 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of his founding of the colony of Pennsylvania. The park is on the site of his original home in Philadelphia.

The park, located in Philadelphia near the Delaware River at Sansom and Second Streets, will be "rehabilitated" and that proposal will include an "expanded interpretation of the Native American history of Philadelphia." The plan was "developed in consultations with the representatives of the indigenous nations of the Haudenosaunee, the Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma."

While much of the original design of the park will remain, the statue of Penn and the model of his original home "will be removed and not reinstalled." The Park Service claims that at some later date, which is not currently funded, there will be a new exhibit that mentions Penn and his work founding what became the state named for him as well as the city of Philadelphia.

William Penn is being canceled now in Philly by the National Park Service.  I guess they'll have to change the name of the Commonwealth now.

PHILADELPHIA — The National Park Service proposes to rehabilitate Welcome Park to provide a more welcoming, accurate, and inclusive experience for visitors. Welcome Park was designed by the internationally acclaimed design firm Venturi & Scott Brown Associates. The park is located on the site of William Penn's home, the Slate Roof House, and is named for the ship, Welcome, which transported Penn to Philadelphia. The design and construction of Welcome Park was funded by the Independence Historical Trust and was completed in 1982.

The proposed rehabilitation of Welcome Park includes expanded interpretation of the Native American history of Philadelphia and was developed in consultation with representatives of the indigenous nations of the Haudenosaunee, the Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. The reimagined Welcome Park maintains certain aspects of the original design such as the street grid, the rivers and the east wall while adding a new planted buffer on three sides, and a ceremonial gathering space with circular benches. The Penn statue and Slate Roof house model will be removed and not reinstalled. In a separate and future effort, new exhibit panels will be installed on the south site wall to replace the Penn timeline.

The public is invited to submit comments on this proposed design for the rehabilitation of Welcome Park for a 14-day period from January 8th – 21st, 2024 through the National Park Service’s Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) at https://parkplanning.nps.gov. Comments submitted through social media, phone calls, email or mail will not be accepted. All public comments must be received through PEPC by midnight Sunday, January 21st, 2024.

The National Park Service (NPS) has withdrawn the review of a renovation plan that included the removal of the statue of William Penn from the site of his former Philadelphia home.

The NPS asked for input on the future for the park, located near the intersection of 2nd and Walnut Streets off Sansom Walk in Philadelphia's Old City neighborhood, and they certainly received it -- at least online.

The online site where the public was supposed to provide comment on the Welcome Park proposal on Monday—the first day of a 14-day period where the NPS were going to receive public input on the plan.

By 6:30 p.m. Monday night, the NPS said the public comment period was closed.

"The preliminary draft proposal, which was released prematurely and had not been subject to a complete internal agency review, is being retracted. No changes to the William Penn statue are planned," the NPS said in a statement.

Shapiro stepped up and did the right thing.  He surprises me sometimes--he's much more moderate than commie Wolf.

William Penn Survives The Left’s Assault On Beauty, Memory, And American Identity
These physical markers of our shared past help to bind us together, gluing us to history and the promise of future generations.

The left’s jihad against statues and public memorials has finally hit a roadblock. After removing statues of Gen. Robert E. Lee, President Theodore Roosevelt, Christopher Columbus, and the Confederate Memorial at Arlington, a New York Times columnist even suggested that the father of our country be ripped off like a filthy Band-Aid and tossed. But it was the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, who resisted and won.

The National Park Service planned to remove Penn’s statue in Philadelphia’s Welcome Park to make it more “inclusive.” The proposal struck enough outrage that Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro reversed track. He took credit for convincing the Biden administration to leave the venerable founder alone, at least for the moment.

It’s a definite win, but it needs to wake conservatives into asking the fundamental question: Why do leftists want to remove Penn’s statue? While Penn owned slaves, he transplanted the Quaker faith to the New World, planted the seed of abolition in the Americas, and arguably set the stage for the entire Anglo world to outlaw the institution.

There’s also the fact that Penn is just not that well known. Given what education levels are today, it would be surprising if even 50 percent of Philadelphians under 45 years old knew who he was or could pick out his statue from those of Thomas Jefferson or Daniel Boone. These are people, after all, who don’t know we fought the British in the Revolution and cannot say when the Declaration of Independence was signed. How could forgotten, currently meaningless William Penn be such a racist, white supremacist threat that he had to be memory-holed?

Of course, he isn’t a racist, white supremacist threat. That’s the unmasked reality.  ...
