A Japan Airlines plane erupted into a ball of flames after crash landing at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Tuesday. The runway was also set alight.

The airline said all 379 passengers and crew had been safely evacuated from the downed domestic flight, according to Reuters news agency and NHK.

Live footage on public broadcaster NHK and other outlets showed the aircraft erupt in flames as it skidded down the tarmac and fire crews feverishly tried to extinguish the fire.

I thought I read that a coast guard plane ran into this Airbus on the runway. Perhaps reports are still sketchy.

Five people were killed when a Japan Airlines plane carrying hundreds of passengers collided with an earthquake relief aircraft and burst into flames on landing at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Tuesday.

All 379 people on JAL flight 516, including eight children under the age of two, were safely evacuated from the passenger plane, according to the airline, but there were fatalities on the second aircraft, operated by the Japan Coast Guard.

The Airbus A350-900 aircraft ignited after flying into Haneda from the northern Japanese city of Sapporo at 5:47 p.m. local time (3:47 a.m. ET). Video showed a huge fireball erupt as the plane ignited, leaving a fiery trail down the runway.

Five crew members died on the second aircraft, a De Havilland Canada DHC-8, according to Japan’s transport minister, Tetsuo Saito. Public broadcaster NHK said the plane’s captain was in a critical condition. ...

A thick plume of black smoke rose over an airport runway in Japan on Tuesday after a Japanese aircraft collided with a coast guard aircraft and burst into flames, local media reported.

Live footage on public broadcaster NHK showed Japan Airlines passenger plane JAL-516 on a runway at Tokyo's Haneda airport with flames coming out of its windows. Shortly after, the plane was entirely consumed.

The coast guard aircraft pilot escaped, but the five crewmembers were killed, NHK reported. An official confirmed that a Bombardier Dash-8 Coast Guard plane was involved in the collision.

A Japan Airlines spokesperson said more than 300 passengers were on board when the aircraft initially caught fire. NHK reported all 379 passengers and crew ultimately escaped from the plane.

Meanwhile, Japan is struck by a 7.6 Earthquake.  At least 48 dead (so far).

Pretty good report.

The HAL crew did a good job of keeping the aircraft on the runway, and flight attendants did well to get everyone off.

It's a shame about the 5 crew of the Coast Guard plane that did not make it. Prayers up for the injured (including one of the crew of the Coast Guard plane) and the families of those who who did not make it.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
