FBI agents seized the cell phones of New York City Mayor Eric Adams as part of a federal investigation into campaign fundraising, a person familiar with the matter told CNN on Friday.

The agents seized the phones and an iPad earlier this week pursuant to a court authorized search warrant, the person said.

The seizure is a dramatic escalation of the federal probe, bringing it directly to the mayor, a Democrat. The investigation is being handled by the FBI and the US attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York.

The New York Times first reported the search.

I've read that this very much is a response to his immigration comments. Don't mess with Joe, Eric.

BREAKING: The FBI has seized New York City Mayor Eric Adams's phones relating to a federal corruption investigation. The investigation is reportedly looking into whether his campaign conspired with the Turkish government.

According to the New York Times, FBI agents climbed into Adams's SUV with him and seized his cellphones and an iPad.

"The agents approached the mayor on the street and asked his security detail to step away, one of the people said. They climbed into his S.U.V. with him," the NYT reported.

Earlier in the month, Adams's top fundraiser Brianna Suggs was raided by the FBI over the allegations that the Turkish government was funneling money to Adams's campaign.

Federal investigators are also looking into whether or not Adams or his team gave any special benefit to Turkey in exchange for the alleged donations.

When the initial raid took place on Suggs, Adams had just landed in Washington D.C. to meet with White House officials about the ongoing migrant crisis. Upon news of the raid on Suggs, Adams immediately cancelled the meeting and flew back to New York City.

Majority of New Yorkers believe Eric Adams ‘did something wrong’ in FBI investigation

New Yorkers are withdrawing their support for Mayor Eric Adams as federal authorities investigate whether his 2021 campaign masked large funds from the Turkish government by funneling them through straw donors.

More than 7 in 10 New York City residents believe Adams’s campaign “did something wrong” in connection to the mayor's close ties with Turkey, a Marist College poll on Tuesday found. The FBI is investigating whether Adams’s campaign conspired with the Turkish government to collect donations illegally for his 2021 mayoral campaign.

Fifty-six percent of respondents disapprove of the job Adams has done as mayor, while only 37% approve. Adams won the New York City Democratic primary by a narrow margin in 2021 before receiving two-thirds of the vote in the general election. He ranked favorably among a majority of city residents, according to a March 2022 Marist poll that found 61% approved of the job he was doing and 24% disapproved.

Adams’s approval rating experiencing a sharp decline this year largely can be attributed to a migrant crisis defining his early years in office. City leaders are struggling to accommodate migrants seeking sanctuary in New York, and residents' dissatisfaction can be traced back to earlier this year. In February, a Quinnipiac University poll of New York City registered voters found that only 37% approved of the way Adams is handling his job, while 43% disapproved.

The FBI raided the home of Adams's chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, as part of the broad public corruption investigation into his 2021 campaign. Following the raid, FBI agents seized Adams’s personal electronic devices two weeks ago. The New York Times reported that the bureau raided the homes of two more people associated with the mayor — Rana Abbasova, an aide in Adams’s international affairs office, and Cenk Öcal, an ex-Turkish Airlines executive on Adams’s transition team.  ...

If lil' Andy Cuomo decides to give the mayor's office a run next time 'round, he'll be a shoo-in...

Any 'side action' he has had, of any nature, which can surely be pumped up into above the fold headlines, has likely gone through one of those devices. Either that or his burner phone budget must be significant.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
