Israeli airstrike on family car in Lebanon should be considered war crime, Human Rights Watch says

An Israeli airstrike that hit a family in a car on Nov. 5 should be treated as a war crime, Human Rights Watch said today. The attack killed three girls, their grandmother and their mother, HRW said. The family was traveling from south Lebanon to Beirut at the time.

“This attack by Israeli military forces that struck a car carrying a family fleeing violence shows a reckless disregard for civilian life,” Ramzi Kaiss, Lebanon researcher at HRW, said in a press release. “Their killing is a violation of the laws of war, and Israel’s allies, like the US, should respond to this apparent war crime by demanding accountability for this unlawful strike.”

The IDF admitted to carrying out the strike, telling the Times of Israel that it “struck a vehicle in Lebanese territory that was identified as a suspicious vehicle containing several terrorists […] The claim that there were several uninvolved civilians in the vehicle is being examined. The event is under review.”

36 neonatal babies still alive at Al-Shifa, surgeon says, but still no evacuation plan

TEL AVIV — Despite the lack of resources, 36 babies requiring neonatal care at Al-Shifa hospital are still alive, plastic surgeon Dr. Ahmed El Mokhallalati told NBC News.

The Israeli military said it was working on getting portable incubators to help the infants at Al-Shifa, but El Mokhallalati said he believes they will still need electricity the hospital cannot afford to give.

The babies need evacuation to a place where they can get proper care, but the IDF has not given them permission to move the children out of Gaza City or a plan to do so, he added.

"We didn't receive anything as a proper offer to evacuate the patients yet — the babies yet — no one has offered anything," El Mokhallalati said. "The only beginning of talks were from the Egyptian side saying how many do you have? What are their names?"

Israel can't accept existence of Gaza, minister says, calling for 'voluntary migration'

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich today said Israel "will no longer be able to put up with the existence of an independent entity in Gaza," after prominent lawmakers suggested moving the Gazan population to other nations in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

"A cell with a small area like the Gaza Strip without natural resources and independent sources of livelihood has no chance to exist independently, economically and politically in such a high density for a long time," Smotrich said in a post on Facebook.

He added that the "reception of refugees" by other countries that will accept them is the only solution to "end the suffering and pain of Jews and Arabs alike."

Israel in talks to finish hostage deal as Hamas names conditions for release

Israel and Hamas are on the brink of securing a hostage deal to bring home the captives kidnapped in the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on southern Israel, according to a report Monday.

The deal is just “days away,” according to the Washington Post, citing an anonymous high-ranking Israeli official. Qatar has been working with both sides to negotiate for the release of hostages.

Hamas has laid out two stipulations for a deal to release its hostages, including a prisoner swap and a short ceasefire.

The Palestinian terrorist organization allegedly told Qatari mediators that it was prepared to free up to 70 women and children held in Gaza, but blamed Israel for delaying such an agreement.

"Last week, there was an effort from the Qatari brothers to release the enemy captives … in return for the release of 200 Palestinian children and 75 women detained by the enemy," said Abu Obaida, a spokesman for the armed wing of Hamas, in an audio recording posted to the group’s Telegram channel.

Obaida claimed the reason why a deal has yet to be struck to free both Palestinian prisoners in Israel as well as Israeli hostages in Gaza is that Israel is “procrastinating.”

He additionally explained Hamas’s parameters for a ceasefire to “allow aid and humanitarian relief everywhere in the Gaza Strip.”

US and UK impose fresh sanctions on Hamas, targeting money transfers from Iran to Gaza

The United States on Tuesday said it has imposed sanctions on a group of Hamas officials and members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) who work to transfer money from Iran to Gaza.

A Lebanese money exchange service that facilitates the transfers has also been sanctioned. The sanctions are being coordinated with the United Kingdom and are aimed at protecting the international financial system from abuse by Hamas militants and their enablers, the Treasury Department announced Tuesday.

The sanctions block the targeted entities from accessing U.S. property and bank accounts while also preventing them from doing business with Americans.

Senior Hamas official texted me:

“In a few minutes, the hospital (al-Shifa) will be stormed, according to the Israeli occupation’s official notification.”

We’ve not yet received any info from the Israeli army indicating that a raid is imminent.

I’ll update as I get more.

IDF forces are carrying out a precise and targeted operation against Hamas in a specified area in the Shifa Hospital, based on intelligence information and an operational necessity.

The IDF is conducting a ground operation in Gaza to defeat Hamas and rescue our hostages. Israel is at war with Hamas, not with the civilians in Gaza.

The IDF forces include medical teams and Arabic speakers, who have undergone specified training to prepare for this complex and sensitive environment, with the intent that no harm is caused to the civilians being used by Hamas as human shields.

In recent weeks, the IDF has publicly warned time and again that Hamas' continued military use of the Shifa hospital jeopardizes its protected status under international law, and enabled ample time to stop this unlawful abuse of the hospital. Yesterday, the IDF conveyed to the relevant authorities in Gaza once again that all military activities within the hospital must cease within 12 hours. Unfortunately, they did not.

The IDF has also facilitated wide-scale evacuations of the hospital and maintained regular dialogue with hospital authorities.

We call upon all Hamas terrorists present in the hospital to surrender.

[The majority opinion is:  the one thing Israel (Netanyahu) preferred to a two-state solution has been a "quiet" Hamas and their feud with Abbas's Fatah as a bulwark against it.   If Hamas goes, it would make sense the Gazans would need to follow.]
