As it stands now, Russia controls Orthodox Church in Ukraine.  Putin is using the Russian Orthodox Church as a means of dominating Ukraine by refusing to permit the creation of an independent / separate Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

It is not beyond imagination that Putin would use Orthodox Church as a covert tool or social influence to subvert the Ukrainian Government and erode support for Ukrainian resistance to Russia's invasion.

Not to mention the potential for using the church network for intelligence gathering.
