The New Jersey attorney general’s office will open an inquiry into a fatal car crash four years ago that involved Nadine Menendez, the wife of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ).
According to newly released police records, Nadine Menendez struck and killed a pedestrian on the night of Dec. 12, 2018, in the New Jersey town of Bogota. She was not charged and told police the man jumped onto her windshield. Police conducted a brief investigation but did not find Nadine at fault, determining the man, identified as Richard Koop, 49, was jaywalking.
The incident was first reported this week, and the New Jersey attorney general’s office launched its inquiry one day after reports surfaced. The newly released reports raised questions about the credibility of the police investigation into Nadinee, as there is no indication of whether she was tested for drugs or alcohol, and police let her leave with no summons.
The Koop family has pressed for more information about how police business was conducted on the crime scene that night, telling reporters Nadine did not make an effort to assist Richard Koop after he was injured by her.
“She did nothing to come and render any aid,” Sheri Breen, a lawyer for Koop's family, told NBC News. “She moved her car out of the way, but she never came; for the entire length of the video that I was given, she never came to look at him, didn't even she never check to see if he’s alive.”
