A potentially fatal new virus is sweeping New South Wales, with thousands of cases emerging across the state in the last week.

Human metapneumovirus or HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory disease in people of all ages and potentially progress to severe illness such as pneumonia and bronchitis.

About 1,168 cases were detected in NSW last week but infection numbers are likely to be underestimated as people may not seek out a test.

HMNPV cases have risen from 640 three weeks ago to 1,008 - with a trajectory set to outpace COVID.  ...
