Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Wants to Open City-Owned Grocery Stores

Jordan Dixon-Hamilton 14 Sep 2023

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) is looking into opening taxpayer-funded, city-owned grocery stores in areas in which businesses have pulled out due to rampant crime.

Johnson announced a partnership with the Economic Security Project to look into the possibility of opening city-owned grocery stores. The first step in the partnership will be to perform a feasibility study, but the city did not provide a timeline, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Johnson claimed his administration is “committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities.”

The mayor said in a statement:

All Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options. We know access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the South and West sides. A better, stronger, safer future is one where our youth and our communities have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. My administration is committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities.

Is Doh! Mayor Brandon Johnson really stupid enough to believe that Kroger or whoever is the major grocery store chain owner would shut down stores that are safe and profitable? These boondoggles will become centers for theft and violence against workers (assuming the store can find workers).

Want stores to open up in these areas? Get! Thugs! Off! The! Streets!!!
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Chicago mayor considers creating city-owned grocery store after Walmart, Whole Foods close stores in the city
Story by Eric Revell •
12h

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced last week that his administration is exploring a city-owned grocery store as a means of promoting "equitable" access to food, though the plan has drawn criticism from skeptics of a government owned and operated store.

Chicago would become the first major U.S. city to implement a municipally owned grocery store to address food inequity if the proposal advances, the mayor’s office said in a release. Johnson’s office said Wednesday that it’s working with the Economic Security Project, a non-profit group, on a feasibility study that "will help inform the Johnson administration’s emerging food retail strategy, which will receive input from experts, community leaders, and Chicago’s Food Equity Council."

"All Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options. We know access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the South and West sides," Johnson said. "My administration is committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities. I am proud to work alongside partners to take this step in envisioning what a municipally owned grocery store in Chicago could look like."

I'm not creative enough to picture how corrupt a city run store in Chicago would be! **nononono*

So what happens when they catch you shoplifting from a government store?  Do they let you go free?
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

Hoodat wonders:
"So what happens when they catch you shoplifting from a government store?  Do they let you go free?"

There's no worry.
There will be the regular checkout lanes,
The self-checkout lanes,
and (because of "equity"),
There will be special non-paying lanes for the shoplifters.

Commie Chicago to have state-run grocery stores instead of a solution to its crime crisis
Opinion by Isaac Schorr

11h

Urban progressives’ treatment plans for their self-inflicted wounds are always some toxic combination of too simplistic and too roundabout.

Over the past two years, both Walmart (four of eight) and Whole Foods (two of four) have closed half their Chicago locations.

The retailers released boilerplate, euphemistic statements to explain their choices.

“We know the community will have questions about why we are closing these locations,” acknowledged the former.

“The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago — these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years.”

So who is going to supply the food for the city run grocery stores?
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

So who is going to supply the food for the city run grocery stores?

Whomever can bid the cheapest.  It will then be trucked to the City warehouses, where it will be paid for by the city, and theft thereafter becomes a burden on the city's taxpayers.

So, cheap food, of poor quality, just barely fit for human consumption, which will cost the city taxpayer an arm and a leg.

Typical socialist bullshit.

Some relative or close friend of the mayor who happens to own a food warehouse.

Mayor of Chicago announces city-run grocery stores to replace the real ones fleeing the city due to predatory city government, collapsing social order, and industrial-scale shoplifting.

It’s worth noting the Soviets tried this and got food shortages. And they put shoplifters in the gulag.

Chicago already has failing schools, failing health-care, and of course failing public safety.

It could get a lot harder to find food in the city. True you can always Uber Eats, at least until the drivers get robbed enough times.

In theory, at some point the voters rebel. In really, in many once-great American cities they missed their chance.
