UAW President: Companies Got Billions from Inflation Reduction Act, Workers Haven’t

Ian Hanchett 4 Sep 2023

On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Lead,” UAW President Shawn Fain talked about endorsing a candidate in the 2024 presidential contest and demands to the White House around guarantees for employees around electric vehicle provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act and stated that “it’s back to the same old story. When the corporations come to the government with their hand out, the government always delivers billions and billions of dollars. But when the working class people show up and say, we want our share, we want our equitable share, there’s always a reason why it can’t happen.”

Host Bianna Golodryga asked, “You are clearly not afraid to break the mold here, and one of those issues is involving an endorsement for the Democratic president, in this case, President Biden and his endorsement for his re-election. Is an endorsement from your union contingent upon a deal with the White House on these specific demands that you have related to his Inflation Reduction Act, and that is subsidies for electric vehicles? You would like some contingencies based upon that for guarantees for employees too.”

Fain responded, “Well, it’s back to the same old story. When the corporations come to the government with their hand out, the government always delivers billions and billions of dollars. But when the working class people show up and say, we want our share, we want our equitable share, there’s always a reason why it can’t happen. When it comes to endorsements, our endorsements are going to be earned. And so, actions speak louder than words. So, we will make endorsements when the time is right and we feel like the candidates have shown and have delivered for our member’s needs and for the working class
needs.”

UAW President: 20% of Big Three Powertrain Workers Stand to Lose Jobs Under Electric Vehicle Transition

On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Lead,” UAW President Shawn Fain discussed endorsing a candidate in the 2024 presidential race and stated that there are issues with workers possibly being left behind in the transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles, and stated that “20% of the powertrain workers in the Big Three stand to lose their jobs down the road” if that transition occurs. He also argued that “you can’t call this a just transition if you’re going to go from $32 an hour wages down to $16 an hour.”

Host Bianna Golodryga asked, “So, is an endorsement contingent upon a deal with the administration on these specific asks that you have?”

Biden dismisses concerns over looming United Auto Workers strike
Rachel Schilke

September 04, 2023 04:32 PM

President Joe Biden dismissed concerns regarding a possible United Auto Workers strike that could have disastrous implications for the president's 2024 reelection campaign as he works to promote his administration's economic agenda.

The UAW has filed unfair labor practice charges against Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis as the union has attempted to negotiate over unfair wages and pensions. The union voted in favor of a strike if demands are not met by Sept. 14, when its four-year contract expires.

However, Biden told reporters on Monday that he was not concerned about the looming strike.

"No, I’m not worried about a strike until it happens," the president said. "I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

His comments come as he was headed to Philadelphia to deliver comments at the Sheet Metal Workers' Local 19 celebrating Labor Day and honoring unions at the Annual Tri-State Labor Day Parade.
