Atlantic City International Airport is one of several sites President Joe Biden’s administration has suggested could be used to shelter some of the more than 60,000 migrants who recently arrived in New York City seeking asylum, according to a Bloomberg News report Wednesday.
The airport in Atlantic County is on a list of 11 federally owned facilities that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent in a letter to New York City Mayor Eric Adams of potential places to relocate and house some migrants, Bloomberg reported, citing an anonymous source with knowledge of the discussions.
The report sparked sharp reaction from Republican state and federal lawmakers who represent Atlantic City, as well as the casino city’s Democratic mayor, expressing dismay and calling on Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and other leaders to reject the idea.
