Today’s public schools, K-12, and most universities instruct/indoctrinate what to think. Not how.
Sometimes I think that is becaause the 'educators' do not possess the ability to discern between "what to think" and "how to think", ergo they teach their students what believing it is how.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

National Teachers' Unions, together with lobbyists have taken over the curricula.

How do you even start to fix that?

Step off and teach your own. And when enough Americans do exactly that, public schools will have competition, and be forced into a new model.

Easy in the saying, hard in the doing - The commitment is huge, because the only way to do it generally, is for mamma to stay home. Single income is damn hard, but the rewards will be obvious.

There was a time when kids learned most of what they actually needed for a basic moral foundation playing in a sandbox with their kin or friends.

Yeah, I know. "What's a sandbox?"

True enough.  One thing I always said to my boys growing up:

“Show me your friends and I will show you your future.”

They took it to heart. They have terrific friends.

And they know how to think.

Bust the unions.

There should not be any such thing as a public sector union!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
