Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was on board a plane which crashed in Russia tonight, two months after his failed coup attempt against Russian President Vladimir Putin, it has been reported.

The plane was seen in a video falling out of the sky in the Bologovsky district in the Tver region. The burning wreckage was later seen in a field.

It was initially unknown if Wagner chief Prigozhin - known as Putin's chef and with longstanding links to the Kremlin dictator - was on board, but it has since been reported that he was and has been killed.

A report from Rosaviatsiya - the Russian aviation agency - said Prigozhin was among the passengers.

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list of a jet which crashed killing all on board, Russia's civil aviation authority has said.

Earlier, Wagner-linked Telegram channel Grey Zone reported the Embraer aircraft was shot down by air defences in the Tver region, north of Moscow.

The jet, which was flying from the capital to St Petersburg, was carrying seven passengers and three crew.

Prigozhin led a failed mutiny against the Russian armed forces in June.

Grey Zone said local residents heard two bangs before the crash and saw two vapour trails.

Tass news agency said the plane, a private Embraer Legacy, caught fire on hitting the ground, adding that four bodies had already been found.

The aircraft had been in the air for less than half an hour, it said.

What is up with the single-sentence "paragrahs"?!

Anyway lots of room for speculation here. Was Prigozhin really on board? Wasn't some sort of flight plan filed, so as to notify tracking facilities on a heavily used air corridor? Did the plane do something weird that engendered suspicion (e.g. ID transponder switched off)? Was this civilian flight and its occupants known, and the shoot-down intentional?

Maybe, but he was just down in Africa last week and earlier this week pimping the Wagner group down there, so I don't think that a sudden tragic death would suit his motives and intentions for expanding his group into Africa.

According to the Wall Street Journal: " Video footage posted by onlookers showed what looked like the trail of a missile and the plane falling ...". Unfortunately the article is behind a paywall.  I was listening to Clay & Buck when the article was discussed. The plane was seen falling from the sky missing one wing, while Putin was simultaneously giving out military medals. Don't know if this will all pan out as true, but Putin is ruthless enough and I guess could not find a way to get close enough to poison the guy or have someone push him out of a window.

Update(1605ET): At this point it's looking like the entire top command of Russian mercenary outfit Wagner Group was aboard the private plane that was downed northwest of Moscow hours ago. Wagner itself is confirming Yvgeny Prigozhin’s death, with Wagner-affiliated Telegram channel Grey Zone calling it a "murder".

"The murder/assassination of Prigozhin will have catastrophic consequences. The people who gave the order do not understand the mood in the army and morale at all. Let this be a lesson to all. You always have to go to the end," the Wagner channel statement reads.

The bodies of Prigozhin and his second-in-command Dmitry Utkin, have reportedly been identified, according to statements which have been quick to come out of Russian media. Russian news agency TASS has also made it official: "Evgeny Prigozhin and Dmitry Utkin were on board the crashed Embraer plane, the Federal Air Transport Agency reported."

Hmmmmm ... will Wagner Group fragment and fade away? Or will things get messy for Putin? Both would be good, IMO.

Russia Confirms Prigozhin's Death, and a Top General Is Dismissed in Putin's Purge

Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner mercenary group who rebelled against Russia’s military leadership in June, has been confirmed dead by Russian authorities in a plane crash 100 miles northwest of Moscow.

But can those authorities be trusted to tell the truth? Rebekah Koffler, a strategic military intelligence analyst and former senior official at the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), says there may be a number of reasons the Kremlin would want us to think Prigozhin was dead.

“At this time, we lack independent confirmation whether the Russian media or the Federal Air Transport Agency reporting about Prigozhin’s death is credible,” she said. “There could be many reasons why Moscow wants us to believe that Prigozhin is dead. If he indeed died in the plane crash, it’s probably a result of the assassination operation, ‘wet deeds’ in Russian tradecraft, conducted on Putin’s orders.”

One reason for the reported death of Putin’s former close ally is that the GOP debates are tonight and it would be in Putin’s interest to force split-screen coverage between the debate and the unfolding story of Prigozhin’s “death.”

“If Prigozhin is alive, the story could be a disinformation operation, intended to get Prigozhin back under cover to run clandestine operations in Africa and other places vital for Putin,” Koffler added. “What I don’t rule out is either way, it’s not a coincidence that it happened today, on the day of the GOP presidential debates. The story that originated in the Russian media has hijacked the U.S. news cycle. Prigozhin has become the ninth personality, along with the actual presidential candidates that the media is covering.”

This is at least the 15th critic or enemy who has died under suspicious circumstances since Putin came to power in 2000.

Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s doomed private plane showed no signs of distress until a sudden drop 30 seconds before the deadly crash in Russia — amid speculation that the rogue warlord’s plane may have been downed by a bomb hidden in a crate of wine.

The Embraer Legacy 600 executive jet, with Prigozhin and other senior Wagner Group members listed among the 10 passengers, made a “sudden downward vertical” at 5:19 p.m. local time Wednesday, according to Ian Petchenik of the flight-tracking site Flightradar24.

Within about 30 seconds, the jet had plummeted more than 8,000 feet from its cruising altitude of 28,000 feet.

“Whatever happened, happened quickly,” Petchenik said. “They may have been wrestling [with the aircraft] after whatever happened.

Before the aircraft’s dramatic drop, there was “no indication that there was anything wrong with this aircraft,” Petchenik added.
