Quote
Following an at times confounding series of events on Monday, a grand jury in Fulton County voted to indict former President Donald Trump on more than one dozen counts for his actions in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

Just before 9:00 p.m. ET, the grand jury's decision was returned to Judge Robert McBurney and then handed off to the clerk to be docketed before being unsealed and made public shortly before 11:00 pm.

In all, the grand jury handed up a 98-page indictment against Trump as well as a handful of his allies including Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, Kenneth Chesebro, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis on an array of charges related to their conduct in the wake of the 2020 presidential election.

For Trump specifically, the grand jury voted to indict the former president on 13 counts:

Violation of the Georgia RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act
Solicitation of Violation of Oath by Public Officer
Conspiracy to Commit Impersonating a Public Officer
Conspiracy to Commit Forgery in the First Degree
Conspiracy to Commit False Statements and Writings
Conspiracy to Commit Filing False Documents
Conspiracy to Commit Forgery in the First Degree
Conspiracy to Commit False Statements and Writings
Filing False Documents
Solicitation of Violation of Oath by Public Officer
False Statements and Writings
Solicitation of Violation of Oath by Public Officer
False Statements and Writings

Following the indictment, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said that arrest warrants were issued for the defendants and set a deadline of 12:00 p.m. on August 25 for them to voluntarily surrender.

This is just ridiculous, and sets another awful precedent for the country.  Lawfare taken to a whole new level of ugliness.

Trump, Giuliani, Meadows among 19 indicted in Georgia 2020 election probe

By Samuel Chamberlain and Victor Nava
August 14, 2023

Former President Donald Trump and 18 of his allies and supporters were indicted Monday by a Georgia grand jury in connection with his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the Peach State.

Also charged in the indictment —which was signed by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney shortly before 9 p.m. and unsealed approximately two hours later — were former Trump attorneys Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Sidney Powell, Jenna Ellis, and Kenneth Chesebro.

Also accused were former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, ex-Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark and Trump 2020 Election Day Director of Operations Michael Roman.

Trump, 77, faces 13 counts in the case, matching a docket prematurely posted to the Fulton County Superior Court’s website around noon.

Hours after the indictment was handed down, the former commander-in-chief took to Truth Social to rail against Georgia prosecutors, saying, “So, the Witch Hunt continues! 19 people indicated tonight, including the former President of the United States, me, by an out of control and very corrupt District Attorney who campaigned and raised money on, ‘I will get Trump.’

Meet the 18 people charged with Trump in Georgia indictment
by Zach Schonfeld, Ella Lee and Rebecca Beitsch - 08/15/23 5:33 AM ET

Former President Trump was indicted in Georgia late Monday night on 13 charges ranging from making false statements and impersonating a public officer to conspiracy and racketeering — a charge generally reserved for organized crime.

But the former president is far from the only person tied to the 2020 plot to keep him in power to face serious charges.

Eighteen Trump lawyers, advisers and affiliates are charged alongside the leading GOP 2024 hopeful in the most wide-ranging indictment he’s yet to face. Each of them face the racketeering charge, linking the multitude of alleged crimes together.

The shared charge alleges the defendants participated in a “criminal enterprise in Fulton County, Georgia — and elsewhere — to accomplish the illegal goal” of keeping Trump in office, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) said Monday.

Here’s what to know about the other 18 people charged with Trump in the Georgia probe.

Fani Willis says Trump, 18 co-defendants to voluntarily surrender in Georgia by Aug. 25
by Ella Lee - 08/15/23 12:11 AM ET

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) late Monday gave former President Trump and 18 co-defendants until Aug. 25 at noon to voluntarily surrender in Georgia following an indictment that unveiled multiple charges in connection to their attempts to interfere in the 2020 election.

Willis during a press conference also indicated her desire to try all of the defendants, hoping to begin a trial within the next six months.

Trump and the other defendants are each charged with one count of violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, a law typically reserved for organized crime.

Willis said the charge alleges the defendants participated in a “criminal enterprise in Fulton County, Georgia – and elsewhere – to accomplish the illegal goal” of keeping Trump in office.

The only surprise is that all of us were not indicted, for daring to express opinions about the election.

@mtracey

Wait, isn't the bigger problem here that the vote-auditing process "was not open to the public"???

@mtracey

Attempting to observe a vote-auditing session that the public was declared to be prohibited from attending is cited as one of the underlying predicate acts that establishes Mark Meadows and the rest of the Trump campaign operation were perpetrating a RICO criminal conspiracy

Here were the acts from Meadows that supposedly demonstrate he was engaged in perpetrating a RICO criminal conspiracy. The Georgia deputy secretary of state reported at the time, “he just asked basic process questions,” then left after 20 minutes
