MSNBC Warns of ‘Boiling Seas’ from Climate Change

Thomas D. Williams, Ph.D.  1 Aug 2023

MSNBC warned Monday of “boiling seas” due to climate change, citing ocean readings of 100ºF off the coast of Florida.

Never shy about employing incendiary rhetoric, MSNBC seems to have forgotten that while the boiling point of water is 100º Celsius, it is actually 212º on the Fahrenheit scale.

In his jeremiad titled “We’ve reached the ‘boiling seas’ part of the climate crisis,” MSNBC writer and editor Hayes Brown laments that “oceans around the world are breaking record temperatures thanks to climate change.”

Oceanic temperatures have hit “worrying highs” around the world, Brown writes, and off the coast of Florida, water temperatures seem “more suitable to hot tubs than the open sea.”

It is “beginning to feel like the hackneyed ‘frog in a slowly boiling pot’ analogy for climate change is more apt than ever,” he cautions.

Warmer sea waters a greater chance “we begin to see mass die-offs of fish and other sea creatures literally drowning,” he prophesies.

“The warming of the waters promises to continue to be a growing threat so long as humans continue to contribute to the heating of our planet,” he intones in conclusion, and as things stand, “we are coming dangerously close to hitting the ‘boiling seas’ phase of our climate apocalypse.”

Unfortunately for Mr. Brown and his fellow alarmists, a little research shows that water temperatures around Florida are basically where they are every year at this time.

Again ... a false narrative .... the warm waters are cyclical as recorded

Are water temps in Florida Keys truly record setting? It’s complicated...

...........No sensor has ever recorded a temperature of 101° anywhere in the world’s oceans.

But there is some pause on this preliminary number.

Location, location, location

Measurement of water temperatures is notoriously difficult to find quality data.

Some sensors measure just the very top of the water, other sensors go several feet into the water.

At Manatee Bay, the sensor is located 5 feet below the water line, but the water is very shallow in this part of the Keys.

The sensor is also located in an area where little water circulation is likely. Manatee Bay is located north of the Keys, and is cutoff to some degree from the rest of the Florida Straits by land from mangroves and the Overseas Highway causeways...............

.....This area also is famous for significant organic matter, like algae and seagrasses. This can artificially inflate water temperatures as darker matter will absorb more heat.

It is the warmest ever recorded there?

Another major point of concern on this record by scientists is it may not be the warmest temp ever recorded at this sensor.

Scientists over the past couple of days have found that the sensor recorded a 102° temperature in August of 2017.

The sensor may have also gotten close to 100° in 2009 as well.

This brings doubt that the water temperature recorded earlier in the week will verify as a new world record.

. . .But it was still hot

Even if the 101.1° water temp isn’t verified, it was exceptionally hot in the Florida Keys, and it remains that way.

Water temperatures at other buoys, and remote sensing using satellites, have recorded water temps in the mid to even upper 90s around the Florida Keys.....................

Here are water temps around Sanibel Island,  a little north of the Keys -- still warm, but fluctuating.  Currently not the warmest temps recorded.

Thanks.  88 deg. F.  Last I checked, the boiling point of water is about 212 deg. F.

Swimming off of Sanibel and Captiva was always interesting.  Wade out a few feet into warmer water then go a little further and hit a really cool spot.  Keeping an eye out for large predator's at all times.
