Biden Warns Netanyahu to Abandon Judicial Reform Bill

U.S. President Joe Biden called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday to abandon the first of his government’s judicial reform bills, which is due to be voted on by the Israeli Knesset (parliament) on Monday.

Biden issued a statement as Netanyahu was still in the hospital, having had a pacemaker installed this weekend after doctors detected an irregularity in his heart. Barak Ravid of Axios.com reported on Biden’s message:

    President Biden in a statement to Axios called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to move forward with the planned Israeli Knesset vote on a bill that is part of the government’s judicial overhaul, saying he is highly concerned about the legislation and its potential implications.

    From the perspective of Israel’s friends in the United States, “it looks like the current judicial reform proposal is becoming more divisive, not less,” Biden said in the statement.

As Breitbart News has reported, the first of Netanyahu’s judicial reforms would stop courts from overturning government policies on the basis of what unelected judges — many with left-wing views — find “reasonable.”

Israel’s courts have used the “reasonableness” doctrine to block actions by the conservative governments that have been elected frequently by Israeli voters in the past several decades. Left-wing protesters have taken to the streets across the country, and thousands of military reservists have declared that they will not serve if the bill passes. But the tactics of the opposition seem only to have motivated Netanyahu to press ahead with the vote.

The judicial reform bill passed the Knesset. I'm inclined to regard things opposed by Biden, especially in Israel, as probably good, but I do not know much of anything about the bill.

Imagine if the State of Israel sent out press releases showing concern every time the VP of the United States voted to break a tie in Congress in order to pass a law "by the slimmest majority"
In democracies the majority gets to govern. That's how elections work here & in Israel

I've read that the bill passed with 64 votes out of a 120-seat body. That's not "the slimmest majority."

So, when his party tries to undermine the independence of the judiciary in the U.S., say be packing the Supreme Court, can be count on Biden to stand up for the rule of law?

The judicial reform bill passed the Knesset. I'm inclined to regard things opposed by Biden, especially in Israel, as probably good, but I do not know much of anything about the bill.

So the deal with the judicial reform boils down to either let the courts continue to lord over the people and the elected government or their power in check.  BiBi is trying to reign in the unlimited power the judicial has over the rest of the country. And of course the Left in Israel...as well as the Left in this country are vehemently opposed to any reforms.

As it stands right now...the Israeli version of the Supreme Court can strike down any law or policy the Knesset passes as "unconstitutional"...even though Israel doesn't have a constitution. 


The left can't win elections in Israel so they need the courts to act as a superior government since all the Judges are lefty judges it works for them.


Which begs the question what's the point of even having the Knesset or elected officials if the courts can simply override anything they disagree with?

The Dems in our country wish our SCOTUS had that kind of authority. They've tried to make it that way...but it's backfiring on them right now.

If the GOP wins anyting or a law is voted on and say it's a 52% majority then the left calls it a "slim majority" or a "narrow margin"

If the Left wins by the same margin then it's a "mandate from the people" or a "decisive victory"
