NY Republicans move to ban public pot smoking over its ‘pungent odor’

By Mary Kay Linge
July 22, 2023

A pair of GOP state lawmakers are pushing to ban public pot puffing in a longshot effort to clear the air of “pungent” clouds of funky smoke.

State Sen. George Borrello, from upstate Jamestown, joined Brooklyn Assemblyman Michael Novakhov this week to sponsor a bill that would prohibit the public use of cannabis unless a city or town specifically permits it.

Novakhov, a freshman Republican who won an upset victory in 2022 in a district centered on Gravesend, introduced the measure back in May and modeled it on existing laws banning the open consumption of alcohol.

Borrello signed on after receiving a stream of complaints from constituents who “are now regularly assailed with the pungent odor of marijuana on public sidewalks, in parking lots and other public spaces,” he said Thursday.

“Nearly all of the states that have legalized recreational marijuana have limited its usage to private property,” he added.

Say WHAT????

Ban Pot Smoking???????

What a REVOLUTIONARY IDEA!

Kinda makes you wonder why they never did this before, huh?

I am sure they will have nothing less than total success, and soon nobody in NYC will be smoking any whacky-tabaccy.

BTW,there MAY be some SLIGHT traces of sarcasm in the above post.
Anyone who isn't paranoid in 2021 just isn't thinking clearly!

It should just have the same rules as cigarette/cigar smoking has applied to it.

Public pot smoking is already against the law.  Are they putting them on double-secret probation?
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

Not under NY law.

It is under federal law.

It is under federal law.

The last time I checked, Albany legislated NY state law, not federal law.

And as my nose can quite well testify, federal law is not being enforced.
