US soldier detained after crossing North Korean border without permission

By Snejana Farberov
July 18, 2023

An American citizen has been detained in North Korea after straying across the border into the communist country without permission during a tour, the United Nations Command said Tuesday.

The detainee has not been identified, but South Korea’s Dong-a Ilbo newspaper, citing South Korea’s army, reported that the person was a US army soldier.

The person was taking part in a visit to the Joint Security Area – the border village in the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas that is guarded by soldiers from both sides.

“A US National on a JSA orientation tour crossed, without authorization, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” the UN Command tweeted.

Dumbass.  If he thinks being disciplined in the U.S. military is a bad thing, he's not going to like North Korea at all.

I've met some dumbasses while in the military but this one wins the award for being the dumbest. Should be considered a defector and zero effort spent in getting him back.

@GraduatedBen

Thinking about that time Trump personally brought home three American citizens he freed from captivity in North Korea. There were so many great moments like this that were buried because the leftwing press didn’t want to give him credit for his wins.

Apparently, this soldier - Private Travis King - may have defected to avoid military discipline:  https://nypost.com/2023/07/19/mom-of-us-soldier-travis-king-who-defected-to-north-korea-cant-imagine-son-doing-anything-like-that/

Let's see, here. Black thug joins the army, most likely to avoid jail time, and then gets into trouble while in the army and is facing jail time there too,so he escapes to a communist dictatorship because he "thinks" (ROFLMAO!) that he can play the race card there and be treated  like a hero.

I think that about sums it up,right?

BTW,WTH is a "Private,2nd class"?

Mom of US soldier who crossed into North Korea says 'I can't see Travis doing anything like that': report
U.S. Army Private Travis King ‘just kept going and didn’t stop,’ witness says

By Greg Norman | Fox News

The mother of U.S. Army Pvt. Travis King – the American soldier who remains detained in North Korea Wednesday after crossing into the country during a tour of the DMZ – reportedly has said, "I can't see Travis doing anything like that."

Claudine Gates of Racine, Wisconsin, who was identified by ABC News as the 23-year-old's mom, also was quoted as saying to the network that she last heard from him "a few days ago" when he said he was returning to Fort Bliss in Texas and now just wants "him to come home."

North Korea is remaining silent Wednesday about the status of King, whom an Army spokesperson told Fox News joined the armed services in January 2021 and is currently a cavalry scout with the 4th Infantry Division.

A New Zealand woman who says she was on the same tour as King on Tuesday told 1News, "Suddenly, I noticed a guy running, dressed in black, what looked like full gas toward the North Korean side."

North Korea not responding to calls about US soldier who crossed border, State Department says
King's family said the private could have felt inundated by legal problems and a possible military discharge.
By Madeleine Hubbard
Updated: July 20, 2023 - 11:30am

North Korea is not responding to the United States' inquiries about Pvt. Travis King, the U.S. soldier who crossed the border into North Korea, the State Department said.

The Pentagon reached out to North Korean army counterparts after King ran into North Korea while on a civilian tour of the border, but State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Wednesday at a D.C. briefing: "My understanding is that those communications have not yet been answered."

When a reporter asked if the U.S. had information about King's wellbeing, Miller responded: "We are still gathering information, but we do not have any of those details at this point."

He also said that the Biden administration is actively working to bring King home to his family.

King, 23, finished a 47-day prison sentence in South Korea earlier this month for assault and damaging a police vehicle while serving in the country as a cavalry scout, according to The Associated Press. King was escorted to the airport Monday, and the Army discovered he went missing after he did not get off the flight in Texas as planned. ... JustTheNews

@Kamaji  @mountaineer

I remember this case because it was so bizarre. The soldier was a career private that was to be shipped back to the US to serve some stockade time before being given a Bad Conduct Discharge.

So this rocket scientist decides to make himself an international hero by deserting to the North Koreans. I suspect he has since learned a thing or two about being polite and obedient since crossing the border to NK.

I SUSPECT he thought he was going to be turned into an international hero by "escaping" from de white mans and into the army of fellow non-whites.

He IS pretty stoopid, but I suspect he has learned a thing or two about reality since running across THAT border, and has the scars and loose teeth to prove it.

Not that he is going to be a better citizen once he serves his time for desertion. He seems destined to spend most of his life in lock-up,with  short periods of freedom between arrests and incarnation.

Those of you who have been in the army understand how little is really asked from a Private, and this boy couldn't even produce at that level.

We should have refused to take him back.

US officials say Travis King is in American custody after months of detainment in North Korea: report

North Korean state media outlets announced the government had decided to release King but gave no details on time, place, or circumstances

By Timothy H.J. Nerozzi Fox News
Published September 27, 2023 9:21am EDT

The North Korean government has released a U.S. serviceman after holding him in detainment since July, according to reports.

The North Korean government stated Wednesday it was planning the return of U.S. Army Pvt. Travis King to U.S. custody following months of imprisonment, according to state-run news agencies. The Associated Press reported later that two Defense Department officials — speaking anonymously — confirmed that King had been turned over to U.S. custody in China.

"The relevant organ of the [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] decided to expel Travis King, a soldier of the U.S. Army who illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK, under the law of the Republic," state media outlet Korean Central News Agency wrote, according to translations provided by Yonhap News Agency.

The brief report did not give details about the time, place, or circumstances of King's apparent release.
