The anticipated rise in temperature in some Arab countries during the days ahead is a normal phenomenon that occurs every 10, 20 or 30 years and has nothing to do with the issue of climate change, says Sheikh Salman bin Jabr al-Thani, director of Qatar Centre for Space Sciences and Astronomy.

He told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the world is currently undergoing a time of solar activity, which leads to some weather changes such as the case when winter was warmer in 2000- 2001 and the temperature did not drop below 20C.

He said that rumours circulating on certain foreign websites that some Arab countries are under the risk of undergoing extreme heat by the weekend are unfounded.

He said that the rise in temperature is normal due to the flares of the sun during this period.

He gave an example that when it rained in the country during the summer of last year, many hurried to link it to climate change issues. However, it was also normal and happened a number of times before as it rained in the summer of 1961, 1992, 1993 as per weather records.

Regarding the high level of humidity, he stressed that this is normal, especially during mid-July to August-end, then the peak of humidity recedes and the level goes down again.

He explained that due to the high atmospheric temperature, the seawater evaporates and turns into clouds resulting in high humidity.

He advised people to ignore such websites and unreliable sources that tend to magnify things and aim at spreading anxiety and fear among people to attract more viewers.
