Known for pushing gun restrictions after the Uvalde school shooting in his district, Gutierrez will vie for the opportunity to take on Republican Cruz in the general election. U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, is already running in the primary.

State Sen. Roland Gutierrez, D-San Antonio, announced Monday he is joining the Democratic primary to challenge U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

Gutierrez made his campaign official in a nearly four-minute video that starts with him driving to Uvalde, the city in his district where a deadly school shooting took place last year. He says the massacre was about more than guns but also about how Texas leaders have neglected the state, including rural Texas and “systems ... that are supposed to keep us safe.”

“That failure hasn't been isolated,” Gutierrez said. “I'm running against Ted Cruz because everything that we’ve seen in this state has been nothing but taking care of rich people while the poor people, the working class, get screwed over.”

The video also singles out Cruz for his 2021 trip to Cancun during the power-grid collapse in Texas, calling it “just indefensible.” And it also takes shots, briefly, at other state GOP leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Gutierrez’s entrance into the 2024 race has long been expected, and it sets up a primary matchup with U.S. Rep. Colin Allred of Dallas, who announced his campaign in May.

“Our campaign is laser focused on beating Ted Cruz, and we are happy to welcome anyone who shares that mission into this race,” Allred campaign manager Paige Hutchinson said.

Cruz is many things,but none of them are "stupid,lazy,or afraid of a fight".

This current dude is most likely depending in the racial His and Her Panic votes to put him over the top.

For all I know,thanks to "Biden Borders",there may be enough new Spanish-speaking welfare voters to put him over the top.

What say you,Texans?

The trend has shown that Spanish speaking voters are voting more Republican each year. Gov Abbott needs to send as many border breakers to sanctuary cities that he possibly can.

@Elderberry

I have very little doubt that the AMERICAN CITIZENS of His or Her Panic origins support both America and Cruz,but let's face reality about the recent flood of border jumpers. They are 100 percent dependent on goobermint handouts,and they are being registered to vote by the DNC. Who do YOU  think  they will vote for?

Hell,if I was one of them and totally  dependent on gooberment handouts,I'd vote Dim,too.

Survival for you and your family tops all other concerns.

@Elderberry

Find some illegal aliens in the US that are NOT dependent on welfare,food stamps,etc,etc,etc,and you  have just found an enemy agent who infiltrated into the country in the company  of illegal aliens from south of the border.

Like the Chinese illegals,who have reportedly been sneaking across our borders in recent months.

Gun restrictions will get him the Austin and large city votes.

Cruz is vulnerable IMO, as is all of Texas. Demographics wise it's like identical to California. We can win of course, but it's not a given.

I think Cruz is favored personally, but GOP has a tendency to think they just own these reddish states and can walk into a victory. In reality you cannot assume anything these days. And yes, they do try to cheat.

I absolutely agree -- IMHO I think there is a chance that the DEMS will turn the great state of TX blue.

Maybe in 10-15 years, but not now.

Also add the fact that established multi-generational hispanics are trending GOP due to Biden policies.

I'll guess that the general elections will start getting highly competitive by the late 2030's.

@Well,that commie goober is going to have a tough time playing the race card against someone named "Cruz".

Plus,sooner or later he is going to have to debate Cruz,and it ain't going to be pretty. Which,of course doesn't mean I am not going to try to figure out a way to watch it when it happens. I LOVE to see lefties "step on their Bidens".

@txradioguy

That depends entirely on how many illegal aliens there are in Tx that the left can register to vote between now and then.

There would be NO question about Cruz winning if only US citizens voted,but we all know that is not going to be the case,don't we?

The most serious challenge Cruz will ever have was Beta.

He'd already been on the national stage and he was the perfect candidate for the national DNC to support.

I don't see this State Senator garnering as much outside attention or $$$ because even the DNC is loathe to throw good money after bad a third time.

I agree.

Also,like I wrote  above,Ted Cruz is no push-over,and I just don't see ANY leftist trying to debate him that doesn't get verbally ripped to shreds.

Normally,Cruz is kinda laid back and just does what he needs to do in order to fulfill his obligations,but piss him off,and you WILL find out he is as sharp as a tack in ALL respects.

As Mr T used to say,"Ah pitty da fool.......",although I am lying. The truth is I would buy a ticket to witness THAT verbal ass-whupping.
