Nearly 53 million under Flood Watch from Northeast to North Carolina as heavy rain eyes East Coast

By Steven Yablonski and Chris Oberholtz, FOX Weather
July 9, 2023

After one cold front stalled out and died over the Northeast  and mid-Atlantic at the end of last week, another one is on its heels and will deliver more wet weather that could lead to  flooding as millions of people prepare for the new workweek.

Showers and thunderstorms pushed into the region on Friday and created messy conditions in communities from Virginia  to Vermont after several inches of rain fell.

Water rescues were needed in northern Virginia after drivers ventured into high water in Pentagon City.

And in Vermont, mudslides were reported in the central part of the state, which forced police to close at least one major roadway in Killington.

Nearly 53 million at risk of flooding through Monday morning
Because of the risk of several inches of rain, the National Weather Service issued Flood Watches that stretch from eastern North Carolina to northern New England, with nearly 53 million people included in these alerts.

Not just 'porn' in this case:

Water rescues underway after flash flooding wallops parts of Northeast with 53 million at risk through Monday

After one cold front stalled out and died over the Northeast and mid-Atlantic at the end of last week, another one is on its heels and is expected to deliver severe weather and heavy rain that could lead to flooding as millions of people prepare for the new workweek.

Water rescues were reported to be underway Sunday in many communities in the Lower Hudson Valley and the National Weather Service office issued are rare Flash Flood Emergency for towns around West Point in New York.

Doppler radar estimates indicate around half a foot of rainfall occurred in areas of Orange County, New York, over a short time period leading to flash flooding.

That being said, a healthy dose of skepticism is definitely in order when it comes to current weather forecasts.

I was 18 miles north of Alvin for TS Claudette. There was only one reported death in Texas.

Northeast braces for MORE flooding that could rival deadly 2011 Hurricane Irene: 42 MILLION across the Northeast under flash flood watch after historic rains killed at least one

    Hudson Valley in upstate New York was drowned by eight inches of rain yesterday, with more on the way
    Flash flood and severe weather warnings are in place in six Northeast states on Monday

Huge swathes of the Northeast are bracing for more catastrophic flooding on Monday after deadly downpours dumped more than eight inches of rain, wiping out entire roads and killing at least one person in a storm that may rival 2011's Hurricane Irene.

In upstate New York, roads across the Hudson Valley were waterlogged Sunday - and some wiped away entirely - by the floods.

Today, the torrential rain will continue in some parts of upstate New York Downpours are also expected in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

This morning, 25million Americans are under flash flood alerts.

One woman drowned yesterday in Highland Falls, Westchester, as she tried to leave her home. The town sits on the banks of the Hudson river, just south of West Point - another of the worst hit towns, which is home to the US Military Academy.

Locals described it as a '1,000 year rain event' that has trapped many in their homes.

Now, meteorologists fear the damage may rival that of the deadly Hurricane Irene in 2011. Forty-nine people were killed by the storm that battered the East Coast and parts of the Caribbean.

Yesterday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare 'high risk' warning in light of the severe storms.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a state of emergency in several counties. As of last night, 13,000 homes were without power.

Cars drift on the main road into West Point after a '1000 year' rain event drowned the riverside town, leaving at least one dead and destroying homes and roads

A number of vehicles travel down the stream of rainwater after the deluge hit New York. Cars are seen hitting into one another because of the quick-moving water

Wow.  Thankfully, we live on a hill, right near a bay off of Long Island Sound, so any water would just go straight down the street, and out into the bay.

I can't express how much sympathy and concern I have for those affected by the storms, they have my prayers and sympathies. Having lived where floods like these have never been a concern I realize how fortunate I am.

@sneakypete

This remained as the highest twenty-four-hour rainfall record for any location in the United States until the 2018 Kauai floods, when 49.69 inches (1,262 mm) of rain fell in 24 hours in Waipā Garden, Kauai, Hawaii.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, a record 1,825 mm (71.8 in) of rain fell in 24 hours at Foc-Foc (elevation: 2,990 m; 9,810 ft) on the French island territory of Réunion in the Indian Ocean on 7–8 January 1966. The event occurred during the passage of tropical cyclone Denise.

@Elderberry

Am I wrong in assuming it was not as bad as it would have been anywhere in the  US because that was a lava island,and the rain would  pour off into the sea?

@sneakypete

I'd say you're right on that. The elevation of Foc-Foc is 9,810 ft. I sure couldn't imagine getting that much rain on some bottom land. Well Alvin TX. did pretty good with it's elevation of 43 ft.
