‘Hate Speech’ Bill Passes Through Michigan House
By Cullen McCue
June 21, 2023

The Democrat-controlled Michigan House passed legislation on Tuesday that would give prosecutors power to prosecute “hate speech” and other “bias-related” crimes.

The proposed legislation, HB 4474, would expand Michigan’s 1988 ethnic intimidation law to give prosecutors more power to prosecute perceived “hate crimes” and acts of vandalism. One amendment would consider it a hate crime if an individual is found to have caused “severe mental anguish” to another person.  ...

In remarks before the House floor Tuesday, bill sponsor Noah Arbit laid out his reasoning for proposing the legislation. “I’m sick of checking for hiding spots at the gay bar should a gunman opened fire. I’m sick of my Chaldean constituents being murdered in their place of business. I’m sick of reading headlines about Mosques and Churches being desecrated … Michigan can be so much better, and it’s about time that we were,” Arbit said.   ...

Most of that will get cut back for infringing on the First Amendment.

Michigan House OKs new hate crime, institutional desecration penalties
Beth LeBlanc
The Detroit News

Lansing — The Michigan House on Tuesday passed a package of bills to reclassify certain offenses as hate crimes and designate the defacement of synagogues, churches or cemeteries as a crime separate from ordinary destruction of property.

The Michigan Hate Crime Act, which passed 59-50 in the Democratic-controlled House, would replace Michigan's 1988 ethnic intimidation law so that more categories of people fall under the law's protections.

The law would expand to include protections based on sex, sexual orientation, age, gender identity or physical or mental disabilities. Religion, ethnicity, and race were already protected under the ethnic intimidation law and would continue to be protected under the hate crime act.  ...

Republicans who voted against the hate crimes package voiced concerns Tuesday about broad terms left undefined in the bills and the effect the legislation could have on constitutional free speech rights.

"We are setting our citizens' disagreements up to be criminal prosecutions," said Rep. Andrew Fink, R-Hillsdale.

From the article…

Those are direct acts of violence that are already against the law

But him being “sick of” doesn’t supersede the First Amendment
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Michigan House passes “Hate Speech” bill to FINE AND JAIL parents, teachers, pastors, and politicians who speak the truth
06/27/2023 // Lance D Johnson // 6.2K Views

The Michigan State Legislature is pushing forward a new “Hate Speech” bill that threatens anyone who speaks the truth on a variety of controversial and inherently offensive topics. The proposed legislation, HB 4474, does more than threaten the First Amendment and the free speech rights of Americans. The proposed legislation amends the state’s Ethnic Intimidation Act of 1988 - making it a “hate crime” if a person causes “severe mental anguish” to another individual.
The authoritarian left wants to punish individuals for thought and language they don’t like
This means that parents, teachers, pastors, activists, and politicians can be charged with “hate crimes” if their speech upsets someone who is weak-minded and vindictive. For example, the victims of these new “hate crimes” can claim that a pastor caused “severe mental anguish” because the pastor spoke a basic truth from the Bible. A parent who speaks out at a school board meeting could be accused of a “hate crime” if they exposed transgender pornography in their child’s classroom. Under this Orwellian law, the possibilities for abuse are endless.

If this hate speech bill becomes law, left-wing prosecutors could go after anyone they disagree with, bringing felonious “hate crime” charges against speech they didn’t like. Those who seek attention by adopting a victim mentality can target anyone who offends them. Left-wing prosecutors will be able to represent an entire victim class who cannot handle the truth, who decry verbal intimidation or harassment when facts are presented to them.

The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

Nothing I say or believe can truly upset another person.  It is their background, emotional history, attitudes and beliefs that cause the "hurt," not my words.  Words I say in America which "hurt" another person will mean nothing to someone from Siberia, let's say, which means the words don't carry that "hurt" value, the background of the other person does.
