Unabomber Ted Kaczynski dies by possible suicide in prison

Ted Kaczynski, the convicted terrorist known as the Unabomber, died by a possible suicide in his prison cell early Saturday, a source told ABC News. He was 81.

A source told ABC News the death is being investigated as a suicide but officially there is no cause of death yet.

Kaczynski was found unresponsive in his cell around 12:30 a.m. ET and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Kaczynski was previously in a maximum security facility in Colorado but was moved to a federal medical center in Butner, North Carolina, in December 2021 due to poor health.  .  .  .

Kaczynski's story has always fascinated me.  Living in a shack without electricity or running water, growing his own food, and collecting aluminum cans to purchase electronic parts, riding a bicycle he found without tires, and then saving enough money for bus rides hundreds of miles to mail bomb packages - that is a degree of dedication that I find incredible.

Kaczynski had major trust issues, formulated by his days at Harvard where as an underage teen he was made the subject of a cruel psychological experiment, and culminated by his own brother turning him in.  From his Wiki page:

In his second year at Harvard, Kaczynski participated in a study described by author Alston Chase as a "purposely brutalizing psychological experiment" led by Harvard psychologist Henry Murray. Subjects were told they would debate personal philosophy with a fellow student and were asked to write essays detailing their personal beliefs and aspirations. The essays were given to an anonymous individual who would confront and belittle the subject in what Murray himself called "vehement, sweeping, and personally abusive" attacks, using the content of the essays as ammunition.[21] Electrodes monitored the subject's physiological reactions. These encounters were filmed, and subjects' expressions of anger and rage were later played back to them repeatedly.[21] The experiment lasted three years, with someone verbally abusing and humiliating Kaczynski each week.[22][23] Kaczynski spent 200 hours as part of the study.[24]

In the mid-90s, the FBI assured Ted Kaczynski's brother that the brother would not be outed as the source identifying the Unabomber.  But someone within the FBI leaked his identity to CBS News.  The leaker has never been identified. Another FBI failure.

and the authorities were still trying to figure out who was doing it,
a friend of mine here in Dayton, named John,
was sending letters back and forth
with another friend of his in Albuquerque.

Just as a joke, on one of his letters,
for the return address, he wrote "Unabomber."
He thought is was pretty funny.
His friend in Albuquerque thought it was pretty funny.

The FBI, not so much.
The FBI did not think that it was funny.
The FBI came knocking on his door.

The story is a lot funnier when John tells it.
I can't really do it justice.
But it really is pretty amusing!
