It looks like the Legislature will pass the bill from Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages (D-Nassau) and state Sen. James Sanders (D-Queens), to create a commission to study just how much taxpayers allegedly owe descendants of slaves in the Empire State.

It’d be pure pointless posturing if it weren’t so poisonous.

Ever since Ta-Nehisi Coates revived talk of reparations a decade ago, it’s been about an open-ended focus on grievances, not healing or justice.

Thus this bill’s backers are already saying it will be about far more than slavery. As in California, it’s to also take up alleged discrimination in housing and incarceration rates.

That is, the standard newest-left litany: All social disparities are racism, end of discussion.

NY and CA are hemorrhaging taxpaying residents, so I look at this laughable "reparations" push as a positive, because it'll just accelerate the exodus.  Those states are writing their own death warrants.

Actually, I think it's more strategic, and more devious, than that.  They want to get enough individual states on board with reparations so that, at the end of the day, when each individual state says "we can't afford it", it becomes a done-deal that reparations will come at the federal level.

Once California and New York start acting in concert, the deal is half-way there.

While the slave trade did use New York as a marketplace for a time, NY was a free state and New Yorker units fought on the Union side (including one of my immigrant ancestors). Their blood and maiming are sufficient "reparations".

At this point, I'm not sure if they really care about the metric to be used.  They want to make the basic premise that reparations should be paid a done deal, and then they'll worry about the details for who gets what part of the payola.

A commission to consider reparations to address the effects of slavery will proceed in New York under a bill passed Thursday by the state Legislature.

“We want to make sure we are looking at slavery and its legacies,” said state Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages before the floor debate, AP reports.

“This is about beginning the process of healing our communities. There still is generational trauma that people are experiencing. This is just one step forward.”

The state Assembly passed the bill about three hours after spirited debate on Thursday. The state Senate passed the measure hours later, and the bill is now on its way to the desk of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for consideration.

It progresses just days after a Howard University law professor petitioned a United Nations (U.N.) tribunal to pay every black American $5 million in reparations — a proposal that would not need taxpayer approval.

That, to me, means he envisions a permanent state of preferential privilege for blacks in all aspects of life - preference in schools, preference in college, preference in jobs, all in addition to an upfront cash payment.
