Southern Poverty Law Center adds parental rights groups to ‘hate and extremism’ report

The Southern Poverty Law Center on Tuesday labeled several parents’ rights organizations “hate and antigovernment groups” alongside groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

The extremism watchdog’s “Year In Hate and Extremism 2022” report counts 1225 “hate and antigovernment extremist groups” being present in the US last year, up from 733 in 2021, with several of the new additions focusing on parental rights and education issues.

“Schools, especially, have been on the receiving end of ramped-up and coordinated hard-right attacks, frequently through the guise of ‘parents’ rights’ groups,” the SPLC’s report argues.

How soon before the SPLC discovers private schools, homeschoolers, homeschool support groups, homeschool statewide organizations, and HSLDA and labels them as "Hate Groups" for daring to siphon children out of government schools?

The wider the SPLC spreads its net of hatred, the more unlabeled people will realize, "My neighbor and coworker is a ______, and they are wonderful people, not hateful!" As such realizations spread, the SPLC will come to be recognized as a real-life Hate Group. And unlabeled people will come to realize they are not SPLC-labeled YET.

The author of a Southern Poverty Law Center report that labels parental rights organizations as extremist hate groups met earlier this year with Biden National Security Council officials, according to White House records.

Susan Corke, the director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, this week added Moms for Liberty, Parents Defending Education, and other parent organizations to its "hate map," alongside neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. Corke visited the White House on Jan. 6, 2023, and met with National Security Council counterterrorism director John Picarelli, according to White House visitor logs reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon. Corke, a former State Department official, was accompanied by researchers from American University who work with the SPLC.

The SPLC's access to the White House is likely to draw outcry from Republicans who have long questioned the left-wing group's arbitrary "hate map" designations. The inclusion of parent groups could raise concerns that the organizations could become targets of violence. A gunman who shot a security guard at the headquarters of the Family Research Council in 2012 said he attacked the pro-family organization after seeing it listed as a hate group by the SPLC. ...

Federal agencies and the White House have relied on the SPLC as a resource against extremism, even amid concerns about the group's methods for determining hate groups. The FBI earlier this year cited SPLC research in an intelligence memo that called for surveillance of traditionalist Catholic groups in Virginia. The White House last month tapped the SPLC to serve on a coalition to track anti-Semitism. In an ironic twist, organizations such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the National Action Network, led by anti-Semite Al Sharpton, were also selected for the task force.  ...

For the SPLC, Moms for Liberty doesn't count as one hate group. It counts as dozens and dozens of hate groups. Each chapter is listed separately. By itself, this is leading to massive hate group inflation.

But the problems actually go way beyond that. In 2020, the number of hate groups actually declined. The SPLC can't have that. So they added in "antigovernment extremist" groups, which were previously labeled separately.  ...

Is America a dangerous place for women and minorities? If so, why? A prominent leftist organization long has trumpeted the threat of “hate groups” with a scary red-and-black map pinpointing KKK chapters, militia groups, and scores of organizations you’ve never heard of.

Who better to trust on the matter than that leftist group, the Southern Poverty Law Center? After all, it bankrupted the Klan and has monitored “hate groups” for decades. If the SPLC says you have haters in your neighborhood, maybe you should pay attention.

Not so fast. Not only has the SPLC used its map to target mainstream conservative and Christian groups, but it also has featured organizations that barely exist.

Don’t just take it from me. A former SPLC employee said he had been “part of the con,” a “highly profitable scam” to scare donors into ponying up cash. A terrorist even used the organization’s “hate map” to target a pro-family group in Washington, D.C., but the SPLC has kept that group on the map for 10 years since then.

I’ve been following the SPLC for years, and I even wrote the book on why the “hate map” can’t be trusted. So when the SPLC released its updated “hate map” for 2022, I decided I’d go through the data and crunch the numbers.

The SPLC exaggerates hate in three key ways, according to The Daily Signal’s analysis. It lists “chapters” of organizations as separate “hate groups” or “antigovernment extremist groups,” no matter how small they are. It tars political and ideological opponents by branding them “hate groups” even if they don’t have anything to do with hate. Finally, the SPLC includes other organizations that barely exist at all. ...

As the Moms for Liberty summit begins in Philadelphia, members of the group have reportedly experienced doxxing and having their life threatened by trans activists who recently vandalized the American Revolution Museum. ...

Kit Hart, chairwoman of the Carroll County, Maryland, Moms for Liberty chapter, appeared to be threatened when a Twitter user said that she looked like a “walking candy apple,” and then proceeded to publish her address with the words “wanna play” in a tweet, per The Washington Examiner. ...
