It may be the worst thing to hit the Jersey Shore since Snooki.
As if sharks aren’t enough to worry about, “insidious” clinging jellyfish from the Pacific Ocean have been spotted in New Jersey waters — and they pack a powerful sting.
“Just a heads up folks. I picked up a couple of clinging jellyfish in the northern part of Barnegat Bay this weekend,” warned Paul Bologna, a Montclair State University marine biologist, posted online May 21. “So if you are in the shallow grass beds be wary of these little nasty stingers.”
Native to the Pacific Ocean, the invasive clinging jellies, whose scientific name is Gonionemus vertens, have also been found in Cape May, NJ.
Bologna, who monitors the jellies and post updates on the New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook page, said the invertebrates live in the back bay areas — and are no day at the beach.
