World leaders gather for G7 meetings, ready to pile fresh sanctions on Russia over Ukraine war

Leaders of the world’s most powerful democracies gathered Thursday for Group of Seven meetings in Hiroshima, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine high on the agenda for a summit convened in the shadow of the world’s first atomic bomb attack.

The G7 nations, which officials said have reached new levels of cooperation more than a year into Russia’s brutal war, were set to unveil a new round of sanctions against Moscow when the summit officially opens on Friday, as well as announce that they would redouble their efforts to enforce existing sanctions meant to stifle Russia’s war effort and punish those behind it, a U.S. official said.

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to preview the announcement, said the U.S. component of the actions would blacklist about 70 Russian and third-country entities involved in Russia’s defense production, and sanction more than 300 individuals, entities, aircraft and vessels.

The official added that the other nations in the group would undertake similar steps to further isolate Russia and to undermine its ability to wage war in Ukraine. Details were to come out over the course of the weekend summit.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who is hosting the summit in his hometown, opened the global diplomacy with a sitdown with U.S. President Joe Biden after Biden’s arrival at a nearby military base. Kishida also held talks with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak before the three-day gathering of leaders opens.

The Japan-U.S. alliance is the “very foundation of peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region,” Kishida told Biden in opening remarks. ......................

As Biden meets with world leaders at G-7 Summit, US puts new sanctions on Russia

The U.S. announced a new sanctions package to punish Russia for its war in Ukraine on Thursday, as President Joe Biden attended a summit of the leaders of the world's most powerful advanced economies.

A senior U.S. official said the U.S. and its partners would seek to make it harder for Russia to evade sanctions, access the international financial system and continue waging its war. Group of Seven nations will also take steps to further reduce their reliance on Russia energy sources, the official said.

Biden's administration said it would blacklist 70 entities from receiving U.S. exports and introduce more than 300 new sanctions on individuals, entities, vessels and aircraft that the official said would target financial facilitators and other actors in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.................

Sanctions have proven ineffective, and if anything, have actually  strengthened Russia.  And it has driven Russia to a stronger unity with China, which again is not in the USA's best interest.

Neither point is accurate.  Case in point:

Russia's economy is 'in the sh*t' and Putin 'has decided to settle down there' says former Moscow finance minister, saying Western sanctions will cause a financial crisis next year

Andrey Nechayev, 70, blamed sanctions brought in over Putin's war in Ukraine
He said the Russian economy would be plunged into financial crisis next year

Russia's economy is 'in the sh*t' and Vladimir Putin 'has decided to settle down there,' Moscow's former minister for the economy has said.

In rare criticism from a senior Russian figure, Andrey Nechayev, 70, blamed western sanctions imposed over the war in Ukraine for the crisis, which he said would plunge the the country into financial crisis next year.

He also said that while western franchises like 'McDonald's can be replaced by blini [Russian pancakes], high-tech products can't,' The Times reported.

Nechayev's comments at the Ekaterinburg financial forum this week drew nervous smiles from the audience, according to the publication. One member of the audience roundly applauded the former minister, it said.

Condemning Moscow's economic outlook, he said Russia's finances were 'in the sh*t', adding: 'And what's worse is that we've decided to settle down there.'

Kamaji,

That just is not reality.  More BS from a media that long ago is NOT to be trusted.

How many folks do you know and talk to in Russia regularly?  I know quite a few, and their life is relatively unaffected by the sanctions.  And there is no movement to displace Putin.  He is still revered in Russia and has them convinced what he is doing in Ukraine is honorable, and not that he is the modern day Hitler.

If you knew anything about Russia's economy, you would know they are doing fine.  Their primary source of revenue is oil and natural gas.  China is taking up the slack for everything Europe has decided to boycott.  So all the sanctions have not hurt Russia.

The Russian ruble is NOT far off what it was valued at prior to the start of the war.  If Russia was truly being hurt economically, the ruble would have plunged in value.  That is not happening.  And in fact, Russia along with other OPEC nations are moving away from the petro dollar, and that will in fact in the long term hurt the USA.

You are utterly clueless!!!

Right back atcha, clueless wonder.  Paranoia, and a misguided love for Putin, is not an adequate replacement for statements that are at least grounded in reality.

Russia is not doing well, not on the battlefield and not economically.

You're entitled to believe whatever lies you wish to tell yourself, all for the sake of your hatred of Biden and the democrats.

BTW, anecdotes from unnamed sources do not an accurate source of data make, particularly not in a discussion.

Also, our foreign relationship with many nations under Biden have weakened because of the idiot policies of Biden and Co.  Saudi Arabia, a prime nation in the Middle East is turning to other nations and reducing their involvement with the USA.  Other nations are doing the same.

Our policies on the foreign frontier are moronic, and sanctions have been ineffective in dealing with Russia.  And there are more news sources saying that than the dribble BS you are quoting.

..............Are sanctions hurting Russia?

Western leaders predicted Russia's economy would collapse. After the invasion of Ukraine and first sanctions, prices rose sharply and people took their money out of banks.

But the International Monetary Fund believes Russia's economy could grow by 0.7% in 2023.

This is because Russia is exporting 8.3 million barrels of oil a day - the highest level since April 2020, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The biggest importers are India and China.

However, the IEA says that Russia's earnings from oil and gas exports fell to £6.5bn ($8.1bn) a month in April 2023, from £18.2bn ($22.5bn) because of Western sanctions...........

Neo-Fascist Russia:  https://www.gopbriefingroom.com/index.php/topic,499381.0.html

The underlying article is a book review of a book written by someone who has been there, and talked to Russians, and names his sources:

To wit:

Russia’s fear of invasion is not quite senseless paranoia. The country has been invaded many times since the wave of onslaughts in the 13th and 14th centuries by the Mongol empire. These invasions came from the east and the south and were successful in subduing the Russians, who were then still stateless. More recent attacks, from the 16th century on, came from the Swedes, the Poles, the French, the Ottomans, and—most bloodily—the Germans. All of these left mountains of dead, but still failed.

An all-out invasion of that kind is very unlikely to happen today. If it did, Russia would likely retaliate by going nuclear. According to most estimations, Russia has more nuclear warheads—nearly 6,000—than any other country in the world, including the United States. The invasion Russia now fears is less tangible. It is more like an infection—an infection of democracy, of civil society, of the rule of law, of clean and accountable government. The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, fears institutions like these above all else. He needs protection from them, and to prevent their influence and appeal from seeping into the minds of his country’s youth.

One of these protections—or so Putin believes—is Ukraine. Putin sees that country as a crucial physical bulwark against Western influence, but it has been a centre of the very influences he most fears for more than a decade. If Ukraine is to protect Russia from the West, the country as it presently stands must be destroyed. And for that, new generations of Russia must be persuaded of both its future importance and its present danger.

*  *  *

That war’s ebb and flow still commands our news and our fears. We know much less about how the conflict has been transforming Russia itself. And according to a new book of close reporting by historian Ian Garner, Russia is using every device of the modern media to create a fascist society, developed and deepened by young men and women, teenagers, and even children, who are having a whale of a time.

Garner’s book is titled Z Generation: Into the Heart of Russia’s Fascist Youth. The “Z” in the title refers to a symbol that has become something like an equivalent of the Nazi swastika since the day Russia invaded Ukraine. Today, it represents a sign of support for the Russian army, displayed everywhere and employed prominently in Russian war propaganda.

*  *  *

Alina, a young woman Garner had known as a student, grew up in Nizhny Tagil, a city on the doorstep of Siberia famed for its tank factories and for metalworking of all kinds. It too had boomed in the 2000s, but by the mid-2010s, orders were reduced, and workers—who had once promised to come to Moscow to deal with the city types protesting against Putin—found themselves attending protest demonstrations instead. But Alina chose her side in adolescence. Born into a comfortable middle-class family, she studied for a degree in graphic design and longed for Moscow. Addicted to her phone, she developed an increasingly violent antipathy to the West and to Ukraine.

In her social-media posts, she now refers to Ukrainians as “Ukrofascists.” She had, Garner observed, “learned to speak a language of violence—a language of Russian Fascism.” Once open and friendly, she will have nothing to do with Garner now. Her last message to him was a photograph of a nuclear explosion with the caption: “Your children were born to be killed by Russians. And nothing more.” Alina, like Ivan Kondakov, is confident in her educated intelligence and they both look forward to a generation purged of Western materialism. “Kondakov,” Garner writes, “speaks fluently in the language of a fascism that subjugates the individual will to the national spirit.”

Thousands of Russian Flights Using Expired Parts Because of Sanctions

Russian airlines made 2,000 flights on aircraft equipped with spare parts in 2022 due to sanctions affecting the country's aviation industry, according to the Russian newspaper Kommersant.

The paper cited Viktor Basargin, the head of the Russian state transportation watchdog Rostransnadzor, as reporting the information about the flights to the State Duma's Transport Committee on Tuesday.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States and dozens of other governments have imposed sanctions on Russia as punishment. These sanctions have sought to limit Moscow's ability to obtain and build weapons, but they also have curtailed shipments of parts needed for the country's automotive and aviation industries.
