I think some of the hippies of 68, as this Video tries to explain, the midwestern farm boys were radically different than the communist of the past and what we have now. @sneakypete
@corbe I agree. They were mostly naive and concerned about THEM getting drafted and going to VN.
Their counterparts today are dedicated to revolution and the installation of a communist government, though.
As for the acutal hippies in SF during the VN war,I spent time walking around Hay Street in SF wearing a army green dress uniform and a green beret in 1968,and never once got hassled by any genuine hippy. I did have a couple ask me if I would mind them asking questions about MY POV on
the war,and I told them "No,go ahead and ask your questions." I ended up getting invited to stay with and party with them for free for a few days before I had to fly off to VN. When I came back 14-15 months later,I ran into the same crowd downtown, and partied with them again before taking off to head back to Ft Bragg to report in. VERY nice and sincere people.
They DID warn me to stay away from Hay Street when the "professional hippies" were protesting, though. They said I was sure to be gang-jumped and maybe even beaten to death if I did.
The FACT is that the "professional hippies" weren't hippies and were not accepted by actual hippies. They were communists wearing a hippy disguise.
