Republicans Reject Dianne Feinstein Committee Replacement

Senate Republican leadership and rank-and-file Republicans have rejected temporarily replacing Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on the Judiciary Committee.

Feinstein has faced calls to resign as she has continued her indefinite absence, which led the California Democrat to ask Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to temporarily fill her seat on the influential Judiciary Committee. Without Feinstein, Democrats cannot advance their judicial nominees out of the committee.

At least ten Senate Republicans would have to agree on the Senate floor to replace Feinstein with another Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.

However, Senate Republicans have roundly rejected Schumer’s move.

“I will not go along with Chuck Schumer’s plan to replace Senator Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee and pack the court with activist judges. Joe Biden wants the Senate to rubber stamp his unqualified and controversial judges to radically transform America,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), a Senate Judiciary Committee Republican, wrote.

She added, “Senate Democrats are also attempting to upend precedent and Senate custom by abolishing home-state Senators’ right to object to Biden’s activist liberal judges. We must stand up and protect the Senate’s constitutional role to provide advice and consent on judicial nominees.”

At least three Republican senators have said they will not support a move to temporarily replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., on the Senate Judiciary Committee -- saying they wouldn't want to help Democrats advance President Joe Biden's agenda.

On Monday afternoon, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who sits on the committee, became the most recent Republican to voice his opposition to temporarily replacing Feinstein while she recovers at home from having shingles, signaling an uphill battle Senate Democrats face in securing a replacement.

"Never, not once, have we allowed temporary substitutes on committees, and now is not the time to start. Republicans are not going to break this precedent in order to bail out Senator Schumer or the Biden administration's most controversial nominees," Cornyn, a senior Republican close to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, claimed. "Senator Feinstein has been a mainstay of this body for more than three decades, and I hope to see her back in these halls soon. But until then, President Biden's most controversial parts partisan judicial nominees will have to wait," he added later.

White House Slams Republicans for Not Bailing Out Democrats on Feinstein Dilemma

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre slammed Republicans on Tuesday for not bailing out the Democrat senators who wish to temporarily replace sickly Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on the Judiciary Committee.

Senate Republicans have refused to bail out Democrats’ dilemma of Feinstein’s health-related absence, which has delayed judicial confirmations. Feinstein holds a key vote on the Judiciary Committee.

Last week, Feinstein told Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-CA) she could be temporarily replaced on the committee until she returns amid calls for her resignation. But at least ten Senate Republicans would have to agree on the Senate floor to replace Feinstein with another Democrat on the committee.

“This is a request that we think is reasonable,” Jean-Pierre said. “This is something that Senator Dianne Feinstein asked for. This is her request.”

The press secretary ripped Republicans for using a health absence to protect America from far-left judges being confirmed by the Senate.

“It is flat wrong to seek partisan health issues of a colleague,” she said. “This is something she put forward. This was her request.”
