Eliminating that annoying "pop up" box with
« on: April 14, 2023, 10:03:15 pm »
How do I eliminate that annoying "pop up box" that slides across my screen and blocking what I am typing?

Has crucial info in it,like the birthdays of Hollywood stars,gardening tips,weather reports,etc,etc,etc.

On this site? That sounds like malware to me, when did it start?

@sneakypete

Yeah, sounds like adware... There is no such thing on this site.

Install Malwarebytes ADWCleaner , and run  it... let it murder what it wants to.

If it found something, and fixed you, Report back... Otherwise something more substantial may be required...

PS: you need not buy anything to run this tool... And it can be uninstalled at your leisure. It does not run in the back ground and is only for cleaning an existing problem.

It started when I downloaded WIN 10 on the new "wiped computer. It now pops up and blocks my screen so I  can't read or write a post. Hitting the "x"at the top right of the box only  seems to encourage it.

Which browser are you using, @sneakypete ? (Edge, Chrome, Firefox)

@sneakypete

Download Chrome or Firefox and see if the problem occurs there too... The idea being to see if the adware is systemic or limited only to Edge.

If it is 'legit' adware, an ad blocker like UBlock Origin added as an extension to Edge will likely eliminate it.

It does not happen here with Edge... But then, I am running Ublock Origin Extension in all of my browsers.

Thanks,but your asking me what browser I was using set fire to the wick in my kerosene-powered brain,so I immediately downloaded Firefox.

Truth to tell,it was the ONLY browser I had ever used since buying my first computer.

Damn chemo  brain!

Heh. S'alright @sneakypete  :beer:
Well, if it ain't happening in Firefox, then I will call it resolved, and assume the offense is from MS Edge's inbuilt legal adware... Still would recommend adding the Ublock extension to any/all browsers, and most all that ad bullcrap will just go away.

Ping me back if you need more.  :seeya:

@sneakypete

Adding an extension to Firefox:

In the top right corner of Firefox, right under the [X], there is a symbol consisting of 3 horizontal bars.
Poke that.
Then poke settings.
In the side bar, find 'Extensions and Themes'
Poke that.

It should come up in the 'Add-ons Manager', in the 'Extensions' dialog.

At the top is a search dialog, 'Find more add-ons'
Type in 'UBlock' and hit enter.

'UBlock Origin' will be the first returned item.
Poke into it.
When it's dialog page comes up, poke the big green 'Add to Firefox' button,
And follow the brief installation.

Easy. And about the same sort of thing to add extensions to Edge or Chrome.

Note that extensions may not be available (read, working) until the browser is shut off and restarted.

And please don't load your browser up with useless extensions. bare minimum useful ones, fine.

Thanks!

I have copied and saved it to my home page.

BTW,that annoying pop up box is  still popping up. Just a few minutes ago it as fearing "Word Art Day".

Thinking about seeing if I can delete  MS Edge without losing anything but that crap.

Well @sneakypete , if that adware is popping up in Firefox TOO, then it seems you have an infection.

Did you try to download and install Malwarebytes ADWCleaner ? Did it find anything?

And NO - There is no valid way to uninstall MS Edge. No matter what you might read, DON'T try it.

Can't get it to completely download.

Can't get it to completely download.

@sneakypete

Then you're infected.
Dude.. Where did you get 'Windows10' from?

Alright... two ways forward.

First, try this instead:
https://www.emsisoft.com/en/home/emergency-kit/
(Hit the big 'Download now' button)

If no joy:

Do you have another operational box that can take a download, and can you move the downloaded file from that box to the infected one? If so, forget the first download (ADWCleaner) and focus on the second... The emergency kit from Emsisoft... It's got a lot more torque.

if no joy, we can assume something is blocking the download of any executable... and if it won't allow hard copy from a thumb, you are almost boned. Not that the machine is boned... But trying to talk you through fixing it with your chemo head is gonna be a bitch for both of us... It's a new enough load, can you rub it off again and start over?
