Why Mike Lee's Amendment to the Omnibus Sent Democrats Scrambling Overnight

Late on Wednesday evening following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's address to a joint session of Congress, members of the United States Senate were back to squabbling over the 4,155-page, $1.7 trillion omnibus bill being forced by Democrats with assistance from some Republicans such as Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky — and the massive bill might be in deep trouble.

In a stroke of genius, Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah decided to try and attach an amendment to the monstrous omnibus that would extend Title 42 expulsion authority that was set to expire this week.

Lee further explained on his personal Twitter account that the omnibus "contains nothing to secure the border, and in fact contains language undermining border security. Without an up-or-down vote on Title 42, every Senate Republican should oppose cloture on this bill," he said.

And, instead of the insanity contained in the omnibus, Lee called on Senate Republicans to "support a short-term spending bill, allowing the new Congress—with the incoming Republican House—to start the spending process over again in January."

Lee's proposed amendment sent Democrats scrambling, and those antics are, oddly enough, uniting Republicans from divergent wings of the GOP.

If my amendment fails, the border will be wide open. No one should support that. Every Senate Republican should (a) vote for my amendment, and (b) oppose the omnibus if it fails. Even better, every Senate Republican should oppose the omnibus either way.

Senate defeats amendment by GOP UT Sen Mike Lee to preserve Title 42, 50-47. Needed a simple majority for adoption

1. The amendment saving Title 42 had the votes to pass, with all GOP plus Manchin and Sinema. Schumer then paused the vote clock and twisted arms until both flipped their votes & the amendment failed. Any Republicans previously supporting this awful omnibus should now oppose it.

2. Without the amendment preserving Title 42, the omnibus hinders border enforcement, leading to a massive expansion of our existing security humanitarian crises on the southern border.

3. The omnibus is terrible on its own. It’s intolerable with this development. No Republican should support it.

Senate approves omnibus bill 68-29. The bill now goes to the House. It is unclear if the House will tackle the bill tonight or tomorrow.

Here are the 18 Republican senators who voted for the $1.7 trillion omnibus:

Blunt, Boozman, Capito, Collins, Cornyn, Cotton, Graham, Inhofe, McConnell, Moran, Murkowski, Portman, Romney, Rounds, Shelby, Thune, Wicker, Young.

In addition, there were three senators who didn't even show up to vote all of whom were Republicans: Barasso, Sasse, and Burr.

Merry Christmas, America!

Shelby, the senator that turned on Roy Moore and went full Rino the last few years.... but his legacy lives on his new lady Rino replacement (that worked for Shelby) that got voted in with the endorsement of Trump, ending Mo Brooks who had a rock solid conservative voting record.

Thanks Trump ! /end sarcasm
