RCMP arrest Hydro-Quebec employee, charge him with providing trade secrets to China
The arrest of Yuesheng Wang, 35, an expert in battery technology, is the Mounties’ first in the increasingly active sphere of economic espionage.

MONTREAL—The RCMP has made its first arrest in what it says is the increasingly active sphere of trade secrets stolen for the benefit of China.

In the case of alleged economic espionage, police said Yuesheng Wang, a 35-year-old researcher with Hydro-Quebec, the province’s energy provider, was arrested Monday at his home in Candiac, south of Montreal, following a three-month investigation.

“While employed by Hydro-Quebec, Mr. Wang allegedly used his position to conduct research for a Chinese university and other Chinese research centres,” RCMP Insp. David Beaudoin told a news conference. “He reportedly published scientific articles and submitted patents in association with this foreign actor rather than with Hydro-Quebec.”

Beaudoin said Wang, an expert in battery technology, allegedly used information obtained from his work with Hydro-Quebec without the approval or knowledge of his employer, in effect using the company’s intellectual property for the benefit of China.  ...
