I'm a Trump guy, and I'll be voting Desantis.
« on: November 09, 2022, 06:32:01 pm »
I've been wavering a bit and election night has been the final clincher. Let me be clear...I LOVE Trump's political skills, humor, relentless enthusiasm, and policies. Further, he showed the weak sisters of the Republican party HOW to punch back relentlessly against wokeism, socialism, government overreach and every other liberal absurdity. Trump is relentless and aggressive...and right on policy...and conservative ALL owe him a debt we can never pay. But....the torch must be passed for a host of reasons.

First, the simple fact of his age...though he's healthy as a horse, his age would complicate using Biden's febrile senility against him in the 2024 race.

Second, Trump's aggressiveness too often strays into petty insults...which I wouldn't mind so much except for the fact it takes him and the part off message.

Third, Desantis has now demonstrated tremendous competence in dealing with multiple disastrous events...COVID and the recent Hurricane being two primary examples. Not only did he handle these well in political terms, he managed events on the ground with tremendous skill.

Fourth, I love Trump but he has wandered into become unnecessarily divisive and his calling Desantis "de-Sanctimonious" without provocation was a last straw for me. We do need a man who can unite the conservative factions, and I believe Desantis has the policy tack AND the demeanor to achieve that.

Finally, the Trump brand has simply...and unfairly...become too tarnished to the point its a hindrance in winning over some voters (in particular suburban women but others as well). Desantis will no doubt be assailed and his "brand" attacked relentlessly, but at least he starts from a much cleaner slate...and seems better equipped to gracefully slap away these attacks.

So I'm a convert....with a caveat. I will always believe Trump saved the country by winning in 2016 and was a fantastic President. His legacy is so strong that Desantis will be the next guy in that relay...not starting something new but carrying the MAGA torch. I look forward to the GOP convention when a victorious Desantis puts on his MAGA hat and gives full kudos to Mr. Trump for all he's achieved. But it is time to move forward...and I don't mean without Trump, but I do mean with a "Trumpian" candidate (Desantis). Desantis is and will be his own man, but MAGA will remain the theme of his candidacy.

Here endeth the lecture! And I would add, I agonized on this one as I remain MAGA Trumpian, but I've simply reached the conclusion that the only way to move conservatism forward across the country is with Ron Desantis.

Now let's go take back our White House!

I'd argue we always have been for the most part. We simply have favored different tactics aimed at the same goal.

That side, you're formidable in an argument and I much prefer fighting beside you then against you.

@Mesaclone

Agree 100%.

Thanks to DJT for all he did. But it's time to move on, because he's killing us with Independents and women, and his chosen candidates pretty much all lost.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

One thing is for sure.  Trump will not go quietly.  He'll go kicking and screaming....   Seems he's already started the DeSantis insults.  At least DeSantis' father didn't kill JFK...or at least that hasn't been revealed yet....lol.

The next election is always an eternity away in politics.  Unplanned things happen that can reshape the political landscape.  But, barring unforeseen health issues, I think Trump is running and nothing is going to dissuade him from that.

I think the presidency is unfinished business for him.  He wanted to do big things but got distracted by petty Washington politics and incessant political and media attacks.  And he must feel cheated out of accomplishing a better spot in history.  I’m sure he’d like a chance to resolve some of those unfinished agenda items like the border wall or reining in bureaucracy or reforming the justice department.  Yeah, it’s ego.

But, if support for his candidacy does go south, I don’t believe he would jeopardize the presidency by continuing to campaign.  Rather he just give Washington DC the middle finger salute and return to his gorgeous wife and sumptuous life.

As for DeSantis, if he continues handling things as well as he has and demonstrates an ability to swat away media attacks, and is a political step ahead of the democrats, I could support him easily.

That's going to happen...and its a good test for Desantis. Can he take the insults and bait, and stay on message. Other Republicans who've run against Trump have ALL failed. But, if Desantis can stay focused and deflect the attacks with humor and wit...I'd imagine dealing with Biden will be exponentially simpler. Desantis has to tread lightly...he can disagree, debate, critique and banter with Trump all day long...but he CANNOT attack the MAGA movement and he must find a way to win over Trump's supporters. This can be done, and you can see examples of this right here. A big part of why I backed Trump in 2016 is that I believed he could win...and because he had no "back down" in him. Right now, Desantis has that same swagger...less charisma but def a solidity to him...and he needs to maintain it without bringing the Trump foibles of insult and anger against a fellow Republican.

The only way we win this thing in 2024 is IF those two go at it in the primaries AND can come together at the end by convention time. If Desantis alienates MAGA voters...or Trump goes bitter and denies Desantis his HEARTFELT endorsement in August 2024...we lose and Biden gets for more years to destroy what's left of the United States.

I didn't vote for Trump in 2016 because he was acting just like he did this week. A sanctimonious SOB jealous of competition.    He's doing it again.

It sealed it to me today that Trump was interviewed by Fox, and gave this little quote (threat)......

“I would tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering – I know more about him than anybody – other than, perhaps, his wife,”
