Police: 6 people shot outside Brighton Heights church
Justin Vellucci | Friday, Oct. 28, 2022 12:50 p.m.

The Rev. Nicita Moses was speaking from the pulpit in her church during a funeral service in Brighton Heights on Friday afternoon when shots started to ring out.

“It was chaotic,” said Moses, standing near a car with the driver’s side window blown out from gunfire. “We heard these shots, and everyone started running.”

Panic ensued inside Destiny of Faith Church, cutting the funeral short. Someone jumped over the casket while running for cover.

“Why would someone come to a funeral and try to kill even more people?” Moses asked. “It’s upsetting.”

Six people were shot outside the church in the 3700 block of Brighton Road just after noon in what could have been in retaliation for the Oct. 15 killing of a 20-year-old man, who was shot to death in Pittsburgh’s North Side. ...

The funeral service was held in memory of John Hornezes Jr., a North Side resident who was killed during a triple shooting this month near what police have called an open-air drug market at Allegheny Commons.

Two women, both described by police as innocent bystanders, were killed in that shooting.

Police have said Hornezes was involved in the Oct. 15 shooting, which occurred when a Sunoco gas station parking lot argument erupted into gunfire near a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus shelter.  ...

Riiiight, the Rev. Moses must not be too bright if gang killings are happening and she can't understand the concept of a big fat juicy target like the funeral of one your rivals attended by more rivals. Sorry Rev. but these kind of people don't have any civility in them.

The latest thing in "news" reporting seems to be to call criminal gangs "groups," as if they were quilting circles or the Girl Scouts.

Sources: Brighton Heights funeral shooting possible result of escalating conflict between rival groups
By Andy Sheehan

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A funeral for the victim of gun violence was disrupted by gunfire on Friday in Pittsburgh.

Five people were shot in Brighton Heights outside of the funeral for 20-year-old John Hornezes, who was killed Oct. 15 in a gun battle outside of a Sunoco gas station on the North Side.

"It was his funeral that was taking place," Pittsburgh Police Commander Richard Ford said. "As far as any of the relationships or what might have precipitated this shooting is still under investigation."

Police believe they have a turf battle raging between rival groups who squared off that night at the gas station nearly two weeks ago. Police sources say some people connected to the funeral victim fired shots at rivals on Thursday night in the Spring Hill neighborhood. Those sources say Friday's shooting may have been the latest retaliation in an escalating conflict.  ...

Considering who the participants were, I've come to regard incidents like this as "urban problems in the process of resolving themselves..."

Maybe there's a lot more of these shootings at funerals that I'm aware of, but it seems I weekly read about some funeral service shot up by drive by shooters.
You would think that the cops would set up bait funerals just to catch the shooters who inevitably shoot up funerals or candlelight vigils.

Probation office ignored alert that North Side funeral shooting suspect shed ankle monitor

Two days before police say Shawn Davis shot five people at a North Side funeral on Oct. 28, Allegheny County Adult Probation received an alert that his electronic monitoring ankle bracelet had been removed.

No action was taken.

“We get a lot of alerts,” Probation Supervisor Jason Bright testified in a court hearing Friday. “They’re not all legit.

“If you get an alert, it’s not immediately checked upon.”

In Davis’ case, it wasn’t checked at all — until after he was charged with attempting to kill five people.  ...
