Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) appeared upset over Rep. Lee Zeldin's (R-NY) focus on crime during the New York gubernatorial debate Tuesday.

Zeldin, who is a U.S. congressman, reiterated his belief that there is a crime emergency in the Empire State and pressed Hochul on locking up criminals.

"My opponent thinks that right now, there’s a polio emergency going on but there’s not a crime emergency — different priorities that I’m hearing from people right now that are not being represented. ... Halfway through the debate, she still hasn’t talked about locking up anyone committing any crimes," Zeldin said.

If Gov. Kathy Hochul was going to give him only one debate, Rep. Lee Zeldin wasn’t going to waste a second making nice. The Republican challenger brought the fight and focus that he has displayed on the campaign trail and scored a decisive victory Tuesday night.

This wasn’t a knockout, but a victory on points because he made specific and realistic promises to improve life in New York. Hochul, meanwhile, mostly played defense.

Zeldin did Tuesday what he has done for months — doggedly fault the incumbent and offer big plans for big reforms, especially on matters of crime, taxes, energy policy and spending cuts. He also was effective in hitting her on the outrageous pay-to-play pattern that is undeniable.

By contrast, Hochul has barely campaigned, foolishly taking victory for granted because of her party label, and her rust was apparent. She also had agreed to only a single debate in the primary and, as she did then, came stuffed with packaged comeback lines but few promises.

Her fallback position was never to miss an opportunity to mention abortion and Donald Trump, as if that would be enough to give her a full term of her own.

Mr. Zeldin is swinging hard (and scoring), but he's still facing an upward climb to win.

My prediction (and you can hold me to it):
He'll get as close as that guy in New Jersey did a short while back, but will ultimately lose.

It's New York, after all.

Is recent Virginia history repeating itself in New York ? Will a Republican candidate for governor win an upset victory because the favored Democrat reveals a breathtaking nonchalance toward the issue voters care about most?

Gov. Kathy Hochul may have just gifted deep blue New York to her challenger Rep. Lee Zeldin by displaying glaring indifference about the state’s soaring crime rate.

If she has, it will replicate former Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s monumental gaffe in 2021, when he accidentally told the truth and revealed that he neither understood nor cared about parents’ deep anxiety over Virginia schools indoctrinating children with extreme left-wing propaganda on race and gender.

In a prime-time debate against then-businessman, now-Gov. Glenn Youngkin, McAuliffe said, “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” This crystalline statement of Democratic insouciance toward ordinary people’s interests detonated like a grenade. Youngkin could hardly have believed his ears or his luck. His campaign rolled the tape again and again in TV commercials, dooming the hapless blue candidate in a blue state.

Now, Hochul has done something very similar in New York. The big issue in this case is a ubiquitous sense of threat felt by peaceful and law-abiding citizens because crime is surging.
