Herschel Walker Shocks His Critics at Debate With Raphael Warnock, Resets the Race in Georgia

I’ve got a confession to make. When I saw that Republican Herschel Walker had accepted a debate with Democrat incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock, I wasn’t exactly enthused. Yes, to some extent, Walker’s communication issues have been overstated, but no one was ever going to confuse him for a charismatic speaker, and certainly, no one thought he would be a good debater.

The running assumption for the month leading up to the event has been simple: Walker would be lucky to get out alive, and absolutely no one was entertaining the possibility that he could excel.

In a shocking twist, though, that’s exactly what Walker did. It wasn’t a perfect performance, but far from bombing, people are actually suggesting that the Republican candidate may have won the debate. That’s a far cry from the predictions of total meltdown being made just prior to showtime.

We’ll go through some of the highlights and then I’ll give my thoughts on where I think this leaves the race. But first, if you want to know how well Walker did, here’s a columnist from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a leftwing outlet, giving his thoughts.

You know he did what he needed to do when someone who writes for the AJC and The Daily Beast (an outlet currently producing non-stop stories trying to take Walker out) can only muster up that “some of those answers won’t play well, but no catastrophes.”

BTW, Herschel Walker's badge is actually real.  He was made an honorary deputy sheriff in Cobb County, Georgia, and spent 15 years helping that department and discussing with deputies how to handle mental health situations.  But I know facts don't matter on Twitter.

Herschel Walker flashed a sheriff’s badge while he defended law enforcement during his debate with Sen. Raphael Warnock on Friday, which prompted the debate moderator to scold Walker for allegedly violating the debate rules.

While speaking about crime and gun violence in Georgia, Warnock noted the Senate’s vote to pass gun safety legislation and emphasized his purported support of law enforcement.

“My heart goes out when I see the kinds of tragedies that we’re witnessing all across our state, all across our country. And it’s the reason why I have passed legislation to support law enforcement. I passed the largest investment in the cops’ program in a decade,” Warnock said.

In response, Walker slammed Warnock for being weak on crime and demonizing law enforcement.

“Well, first of all, you know, any law or Bill passed that would affect anyone’s Second Amendment, I’m not going to stand for and I won’t support,” Walker said. “But third, to hear Sen. Warnock’s talks about supporting law enforcement is sad because he’s called them names.”

“And because of the name-calling he’s done, the morale is down. Recruitment is down only because of what he’s done,” Walker continued. “He’s empowered criminals to think they’re better than the police, and because he believes in no cash bail, in releasing prisoners, he don’t protect the border.”

Walker also touted his endorsement by Georgia’s sheriffs.

“And he talks about the police — I have more sheriffs that has endorsed me than anyone running in Georgia right now. And I even have some sheriffs here,” Walker said. “They’ve endorsed me because they knew I have their back. They’re gonna have my back. So listen to him say that after calling them names, I think it’s a disgrace.”

Warnock accused Walker, who served as an Honorary Agent and Special Deputy Sheriff of Cobb County, of pretending to be a police officer.

“One thing I have not done, I’ve never pretended to be a police officer. And I’ve never threatened a shootout with the police,” Warnock claimed.

Although the moderator tried to move on after Warnock attacked Walker, Walker doubled down on his service with Cobb County’s Sherriff’s office and pulled out a sheriff’s badge.

Warnock does not come out looking good as an abortion supporter.  Instead of simply remaining silent on the issue, he has come out as an advocate making it a key issue of his campaign.  It is not a good look for a church leader and for someone who is one of 12 children born to the same mother.

Herschel was mumbly though somewhat better than expected.  A more articulate candidate would have excoriated Warnock for what is happening.  The good reverend was evasive throughout.

As you can imagine, we are being bombarded with TV ads here in Georgia.  Hershel looked and sounded the same on the debate stage as he does in his television ads.  Sure, he isn't the most articulate person in the world, but he came across as genuine.  People got to see the same person they see in his ads.

Contrast that with Warnock.  In his ads, he comes across as pleasant, confidant, and likeable.  None of that was visible on the debate stage.  Viewers won't be able to reconcile the person on stage with the person appearing in the ads.
