Report: E-Fuels Can Only Power 2% Of EU Car Fleet By 2035

uk highwayLow levels of production mean that e-fuels, a hydrogen-derived fuel source touted as a green solution for internal combustion engine vehicles, will only be able to cover around 2% of the EU’s vehicle fleet by 2035, a new study concludes.

The analysis, carried out by clean mobility NGO Transport & Environment (T&E), predicts that e-fuel production will still be in its infancy by the time the draft EU ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars is enacted. [bold, links added]

Some synthetic fuels are theoretically carbon neutral, as CO2 is captured for production and then released when the fuel is combusted, leaving the net level of carbon in the atmosphere unchanged.

The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

How much electricity is needed to make hydrogen? A completely efficient electrolysis system would require 39 kWh of electricity to produce 1 kg of hydrogen. However, the devices commonly found in operation for this process are less efficient. A typical operational figure is about 48 kWh per kg of hydrogen.

Where is the electricity going to come from to produce that hydrogen and how 'clean' will that electricity generation be? Also considering the number of incompetent drivers on the road I have grave reservation of a large number of potential bombs on road.
