Review-Journal investigative reporter Jeff German killed outside home

Las Vegas Review-Journal investigative reporter Jeff German, one of Nevada’s most accomplished and trusted journalists, was found dead with stab wounds outside his home Saturday morning.

German, whose work in Las Vegas spanned more than three decades, made a career of breaking big stories about everything from organized crime and government malfeasance to political scandals and the Oct. 1 mass shooting.

“The Review-Journal family is devastated to lose Jeff,” Executive Editor Glenn Cook said. “He was the gold standard of the news business. It’s hard to imagine what Las Vegas would be like today without his many years of shining a bright light on dark places.”

Las Vegas police said Sunday morning the homicide investigation is a top priority for the department.

Las Vegas authorities on Monday released photos of the suspect in the slaying of local investigative reporter Jeff German.

Police also believe the alleged killer was surveying the area to commit other crimes before German’s homicide Friday. The reporter was found dead outside his home Saturday morning after an altercation between the suspect.

The 69-year-old victim, who worked for the Las Vegas Journal-Review, suffered from multiple sharp force wounds, the newspaper reported.

His sudden death marked the end of decades of accomplished reporting on organized crime and political corruption in the area. He also gained notoriety for his exclusive coverage in the aftermath of the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting — the deadliest in US history.

In two images released of the suspect, the person is seen wearing a bright orange reflective long-sleeve shirt, a pair of jeans and a straw hat that covered much of his face. He was also seen carrying a dark gym bag over his shoulder.  ...

Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles was arrested on suspicion of murder Wednesday evening in the fatal stabbing of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German, whose investigation of the politician contributed to his primary election loss in June.

The stunning development came a day after Las Vegas police asked for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in the case. An early morning search of Telles’ home on Wednesday provided the first indication that the Friday killing might be related to German’s work exposing public wrongdoing. The investigative reporter was pursuing a potential follow-up story about Telles in the weeks before he was killed. ...

German spent months reporting on the turmoil surrounding Telles’ oversight of the public administrator’s office.

The 45-year-old Democrat lost his re-election bid in the primary after German’s findings were published. German also had recently filed public records requests for emails and text messages between Telles and three other county officials: Assistant Public Administrator Rita Reid, estate coordinator Roberta Lee-Kennett and consultant Michael Murphy. Lee-Kennett was identified in previous stories as a subordinate staffer allegedly involved in an “inappropriate relationship” with Telles.  ...

... Anyway, did you see what happened in Las Vegas? Huge story. A notable investigative journalist, which rules out Kilmeade, this journalist was found stabbed to death. Now, this is the kind of story that enrages journalists. One of their own gets taken out for speaking truth to power.

He'd been actively writing about Vegas corruption and was stabbed to death by someone he pissed off. You know, it sounds like a scene right out of Casino or Kat's honeymoon. But he helped catch his own killer. The killer's DNA was found under the victim's fingernails. So I guess this is what Biden was warning us about. These extreme MAGA types lashing out at our media and our Democratic leaders.

Except, well, the accused killer is actually a Democratic leader, a Democrat politician in Vegas. So, no wonder the media abandoned the story like it was Ashley Biden's diary. A lot of important tips on bathing in there. That's vague enough, right? Now, if you read the headlines or skim the articles, you'd never know, the killer is a Democrat, which I totally understand, because whoever writes the article has to figure that the killer will probably be out of jail in mere months. And we know how the killer feels about journalists who write bad things about him. So really, there's no need to rub his nose in it over being a Democrat. Just call him an official.

1)  Investigate Reporter destroys politician by exposing deep corruption of said politician.
B)  Politician promptly loses reelection because of it
3)  Politician personally kills said Investigative Reporter.

Oh, incidentally, the County Administrator is a Democrat.

Court names lawyers for official in Vegas reporter killing

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A local elected official got court-appointed attorneys during his arraignment on Tuesday in the stabbing death of a Las Vegas investigative journalist who wrote articles critical of him and his managerial conduct.

Robert Richard Telles, the Clark County public administrator, stood in court with shackles on his wrists, waist and ankles — but no longer with bandages on his forearms — while a Las Vegas judge told him he was charged with the “unlawful, senseless and heinous murder” on Sept. 2 of veteran Las Vegas Review-Journal staff writer Jeff German. ...

Edward Kane, a veteran deputy Clark County public defender, told Jansen that Telles would not immediately seek bail and that his office would determine whether Telles can afford his own attorney. The judge let Telles’ previous attorney, Travis Shetler, withdraw from the case. ...
