Roofman: The Escaped Criminal Who Lived Inside A Toy Store

 Crime Zone 1/27/2022

At around 5:30 am on May 20th, 2000, employees at the Main Street McDonald’s location in Belmont, North Carolina were following their usual Saturday morning routine. It was just before sunrise, and they were preparing to open the fast food restaurant for the normal weekend breakfast rush. However, unbeknownst to the employees, at the same time as they were busily working to get ready for their first customers of the day, another person was in the midst of a different kind of routine — one that involved stealing as much money from the restaurant’s cash register and safe as possible.

After cutting a small hole in the roof of the McDonald’s, the masked robber dropped down through the ceiling, taking all of the employees by surprise. Though he was armed with a rifle, he didn’t try to threaten anyone. Instead, he was calm and cordial, asking the employees to please get down on the ground, while he escorted one of them to the restaurant’s safe to open it for him so that he could take the money inside. Once he had the cash, the masked robber walked all of the employees into the cooler where they were locked inside, but not before they were asked if they wanted to grab their coats to stay warm while they waited for help to arrive. After that, the masked man fled.

While the employees didn’t know it at the time, they would soon learn that they had come face to face with one of the country’s most notorious fast food robbers — a man whose criminal exploits would eventually become so strange and unbelievable, they would seem ridiculous even by the standards of a Hollywood movie. This is the story of Jeffrey Allen Manchester, the so-called Roofman, or Rooftop Robber.
