Democrat Pat Ryan wins ‘bellwether’ House special vote in Hudson Valley

By Zach Williams
August 24, 2022

Democrat Pat Ryan has won a special election for an open congressional seat north of New York City that has been called a national bellwether ahead of the November midterms.

“Choice was on the ballot. Freedom was on the ballot, and tonight choice and freedom won. We voted like our democracy was on the line because it is. We upended everything we thought we knew about politics and did it together,” Ryan tweeted early Wednesday morning after the Associated Press called the race.

With 100% of the vote counted, unofficial results from the New York state Board of Elections showed Ryan leading Republican Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro 51.1% to 48.8%.

Polls had shown Molinaro with a narrow lead over Ryan, the Ulster County executive, in the final weeks of the campaign to replace former Rep. Antonio Delgado, who resigned after becoming lieutenant governor last spring.

While Molinaro ran a campaign emphasizing rising prices and crime, Ryan argued he would better fit the district because of his support for abortion rights and gun control following a pair controversial decisions by the Supreme Court earlier this year.

“[The win] represents a clear rejection of Republican extremism that threatens public safety, democracy, and the rights of women to make their own health care decisions,” state Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs said in a statement.

A DCP candidate wins in New York. So what? That's like being surprised when a DCP candidate wins in Kalifornia. People complain about what's going on and then vote to keep it the same way. That is the definition of insanity.

Not quite.  The district went for Trump in 2016, but for Biden in 2020, so it was more of a toss-up situation, and given the recent extremely poor showing by Biden and his disastrous handling of the economy, it was believed that the voters of the district would reject their previous turn to Biden and the democrats and vote for the republican.

.  .  .  an open congressional seat north of New York City that has been called a national bellwether .  .  .

.  .  .   by Democrats.

These 'bellwether' districts didn't mean jack when Trump won all of them in 2020.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

My statement stands obviously. These idiots voted for Biden and continue to vote for DCP candidates against their own intetest. A bigger question is did they really vote for the DCP candidate or is the DCP getting better with fraud?

A better question is why weren't the republicans able to use the blatant mishandling of the economy by Biden and the democrats more effectively?  They have been very noticeably absent on the front.

This district hasn't elected a GOP rep in over 40 years.

Before the 2020 election, there were 45 counties in the US that had hit every single Presidential election since 1980.   Of these 45 counties, eighteen of them voted Trump in 2020.

btw, none of these counties are part of NY-18.  Democrats are lying to refer to this district as 'bellwether'.

Apologies.  Misread the story.  This is NY-19, not NY-18.  The district contains Otsego county which is one of the 18 bellwether counties that flipped in 2020.

Republicans saw a grand opportunity for Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro to flip another Democratic seat, one Biden carried by under 2 points.

Molinaro is the most milquetoast candidate the GOP had to offer. He had Cuomo sitting like a dead duck and did nothing in 2018. Nobody knew who he was.
