Houston Chronicle by Dug Begley 8/22/2022

The hatches are battened and moving day for Battleship Texas is set for Aug. 31, provided the Gulf of Mexico’s unpredictable weather does not intercede.

Battleship Texas Foundation, the group managing the move along with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas Historical Commission, said Monday that plans were in place for tugging the historic ship from its spot near the San Jacinto monument at the mouth of the Houston Ship Channel to Galveston, where the 110-year-old vessel will undergo extensive repairs at Gulf Copper & Manufacturing Corp.

“This date is based on the optimal tides and currents at San Jacinto and Galveston to facilitate the safe movement of the ship,” foundation officials said. “The date is subject to change on short notice, perhaps even the morning of the tow, based on parameters that could affect a successful and safe departure.”

Battleship Texas last moved in 1988, when it traveled to Galveston for repairs.

So, a little outline of USN battleship history:

Pre-Dreadnought - Four 12" main guns, smaller caliber secondary and tertiary batteries, SLOW; scrapped due to Washington Treaty;

Dreadnought - More numerous 12" main guns, quick-firing (QF) anti-torpedo boat and destroyer batteries, somewhat less slow (19-21 knots, mixed vertical triple expansion and turbine engines), incremental armor for whole ship; USS South Carolina started building before HMS Dreadnought, but was completed a little later; all but one scrapped due to Washington Treaty;

Super Dreadnought - 14" and QF guns, incremental armor for whole ship, 19-21 knots, vertical triple expansion engines;

Super Dreadnought "Standards" - 14" or 16" and QF guns, all-or-nothing armor (essential areas maximum armor, other areas structural general purpose steel only), all rated for 21 Kn speed (similar enough to be used interchangeably in squadrons), all but USS Oklahoma had turbine engines; pre-Washington Treaty;

Fast Battleships - 16" main guns, 5"/38 dual purpose guns for AA and anti-destroyer, all-or-nothing armor, modern anti-torpedo defense systems; 27-28 Kn for the North Carolina and South Dakota classes, >30 Kn for the Iowa class (these were the only USN battleships fast enough to steam with USN aircraft carriers), all had/have turbine engines; post-Washington Treaty.

The USS Texas is a Super Dreadnought, 14" guns, incremental armor, and vertical triple expansion engines. She and class leader USS New York were the only USN Super Dreadnoughts with incremental armor. She was commissioned into service in 1914, ~6 months before WW1 started. By WW2, the New York class were deemed unsuitable for combat in the Pacific, so she was kept in the Atlantic until 1945.

Sadly (IMO), all of the Standards - most of which were attacked and damaged/sunk in Pearl Harbor - were converted into razor blades, as the metaphor goes. Dreadnought USS Arkansas, which also fought mostly in the Atlantic, was sunk in the Bikini Atoll bomb tests.

So USS Texas represents a LOT of naval history.

Battleship that served in both world wars begins trip for $35M repairs

Navy Times By Juan A. Lozano 8/31/2022

https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2022/08/31/battleship-that-served-in-both-world-wars-begins-trip-for-35m-repairs/

It’s the only surviving battleship that served in both world wars, having fought Nazis and the Japanese Army during World War II. But the greatest challenge in recent years for the USS Texas has been a leaky, rusty hull that at times forced workers to pump out about 2,000 gallons (7,570 liters) of water per minute from the 110-year-old ship.

To ensure the historic vessel doesn’t sink and can continue hosting visitors, the foundation in charge of its care is towing the ship Wednesday from its longtime home along the Houston Ship Channel to a shipyard in Galveston for much needed repairs.

Tony Gregory, the president of the Battleship Texas Foundation, said Wednesday the pulling of the ship by tugboats and getting it on its way was perfect. He said any problems would have happened in the first 15 minutes of pulling the ship but there were no issues.

“It went smoother than we thought and quicker than we thought … and she’s gone, down the channel,” he said.

Gregory said he expects the ship to arrive in Galveston by 4 p.m.

The ship’s repairs are part of the foundation’s plans to eventually resettle it in a new location in Texas, possibly in one of three nearby cities, including Galveston, in order to attract more visitors and increase revenue.

Am I the only one thinking it would be REALLY cool if the ship were to sail under it's own power?

And DOUBLE cool if it would happen to shell and sink a few Chinese cargo ships sailing to American ports!

HEY! A guy can dream,right?
Anyone who isn't paranoid in 2021 just isn't thinking clearly!

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
It has been  over 40 years since I stood on her foredeck, back when Gilley's was popular, (Jerry Lee Lewis was playing there that night), and when we drilled vertical oil wells (not horizontal ones). The Space Shuttle was still big news...and the words of a major malfunction had not yet been uttered at Houston Control.

I was in awe of the men who sailed on and fought above and below the decks of such vessels, as I have been in awe of those who have done such since the days of sail.

I am glad that measures are being taken to preserve (and hopefully, some day, restore) the Texas:patriot:

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

She's high and dry in drydock already.

Drydocks are amazing. I walked under the carrier Lexington when we were in drydock.
