Schiff threatens new salvo of oversight against Trump

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said Congress is ready to "responsibly discharge" its oversight responsibilities over classified documents that were kept at former President Donald Trump's residence in Florida.
The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee released a statement expressing concerns about documents at Mar-a-Lago seized by the FBI after an unsealed search warrant showed Trump is being investigated for a potential Espionage Act violation and possible obstruction of justice.
“The protection of classified information, and particularly the protection of sources and methods, is an issue of the highest priority for the Intelligence Committee, and as we learn more, we will responsibly discharge our oversight responsibilities," Schiff's statement read. "The question of whether the former president or any other party has criminal liability is a matter best left to the Department of Justice, and I have confidence they will pursue their investigation according to the law.”
On the Intelligence Committee, Schiff took part in its investigation into alleged ties between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia. He also led the Ukraine impeachment effort against Trump and is a member of the Jan. 6 committee. If the panel were to start a new investigation, time would be of the essence, as Republicans are expected to win control of the House in November, and they are sure to stymie any inquiries into Trump.
The Mar-a-Lago raid records unsealed on Friday described 46 items that the FBI said it had seized on Monday, including 27 boxes, “various classified / TS [top secret] / SCI [sensitive compartmented information] documents,” four items the FBI described as “miscellaneous top secret documents,” three dubbed “miscellaneous secret documents,” two labeled “miscellaneous confidential documents,” and one “confidential document.” Other records the FBI seized were the “Executive Grant of Clemency re: Roger Jason Stone Jr.,” “Info re: President of France,” two binders of photos, and a “handwritten note.”
