The F/A-18 Hornet was the first tactical aircraft designed to carry out both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

According to Boeing, the aircraft was designed for aircraft carrier duty and can carry out both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, which is why it has the "F/A" designation for "fighter" and "attack."

"The F/A-18 Hornet was also the first aircraft to have carbon fiber wings and the first tactical jet fighter to use digital fly-by-wire flight controls," Boeing says. "Variants included a two-seater, an improved fighter, a reconnaissance aircraft and a night-attack fighter."

But some liberal judge slammed it saying its environmental impact wasn't studied.  I have news for this judge.  Fighter jets are not environmental guardians.

The F/A-18 Hornet was designed to replace both the F-4 and A-7, combining their capabilities and simplifying maintenance. As a junior tech I saw HUD and indicator set S/N 001 shipped from Kaiser Electronics. IIRC, I did testing for sub-assemblies used in HUD S/N 002 or 003.
