Taiwan authorities on Thursday denounced the incursion of 22 more Chinese military aircraft into their airspace a day after 27 other incursions were recorded amid heightened tensions over U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island.
The Taiwanese Defense Ministry said in a statement that the aircraft included Su-30, J-16 and J-11 fighters. Taiwan, for its part, has deployed an air patrol to monitor and supervise the situation, and has ordered the deployment of anti-aircraft missiles.
On Tuesday, the Chinese government announced the holding of military exercises from Thursday until Sunday after Pelosi arrived on the island with a parliamentary delegation as part of her tour of Asia.
Chinese authorities were quick to condemn the visit, which they have referred to as a "political provocation". They also called for "all necessary measures to resolutely protect state sovereignty and territorial integrity".
