Maryland lawmakers passed Dignity Not Detention to protect immigrants. So ICE detains them elsewhere

Print this articleIn Annapolis last year, immigrant advocacy groups hailed the passage of the Dignity Not Detention Act – a measure that would end private detention in local Maryland jails by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Proponents of the bill said its overall impact would be positive, despite warnings by some that ICE would simply ship people to facilities far from families and lawyers.
