There was no return to normal for Ray Epps, a man who became the hingepoint of a right-wing conspiracy to pin the Capitol riot on the FBI.

Before the Capitol riot ended, supporters of former President Donald Trump were manufacturing stories as a way to ease the pain of the cognitive dissonance they were experiencing. The first story claimed that the Capitol police invited the protesters inside. The second was that Antifa was actually behind the riot, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

When those stories didn't stick, MAGA-world tried another. That one told the tale of an FBI informant who planted the idea of breaching the Capitol in the rioters' minds — proof that the Capitol riot defendants were led astray by a false flag operation, and not willing participants in an attempted insurrection.

The story needed a face, and 61-year-old Mr Epps became the poster boy for the conspiracy theory.

According to The New York Times, which interviewed Mr Epps at an undisclosed location where he's hiding out with his wife in an RV, right-wing media outlets began running selectively edited clips of Mr Epps that they claimed proved he was an FBI asset.

As disinformation often does in the right-wing media ecosystem, the story generated enough talk that pundits with larger platforms — including Fox News' Tucker Carlson — began repeating the conspiracy theory. Conservative lawmakers, like Representative Thomas Massie and Senator Ted Cruz also picked up on the stories.

It wasn't long before Mr Trump himself seized on the story.

Ray Epps has suffered enormously in the past 10 months as right-wing media figures and Republican politicians have baselessly described him as a covert government agent who helped to instigate the attack on the Capitol last year.

1/x The New York Times puff piece on Ray Epps is hugely important.
Ray Epps, the only person caught on repeatedly directing people into the Capitol is the only January 6 rioter the New York Times has written a puff piece for

They know Epps is the smoking gun.

Please read entire Darren Beattie thread. He points out that Epps claims to have been a DJT supporter, and went to DC, but DID NOT BOTHER TO GO TO THE SPEECH.
Quote
That's right, this alleged Trump supporter travelled all the way from Arizona to DC, and didn't even attend Trump's speech. Instead, he spent the evening of January 5th and the morning of the 6th telling people to go into the Capitol

Why did the N.Y. Times defend Jan. 6 mystery man Ray Epps?

WND 7/14/2022

Buried lede in 'puff piece' cites him admitting in text he 'orchestrated' events

Why did the New York Times run a story in defense of the one man who has been captured on video urging people to storm the Capitol on the day before the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and then directing the breach of the guarded perimeter while Donald Trump was still speaking one mile away?

That's what Revolver News reporter Darren Beattie wants to know. It was Beattie who brought attention to the mysterious Ray Epps last fall, presenting video and other evidence to support the theory that the Arizona man was among many federal government operatives acting as provocateurs on Jan. 6.

In an article Thursday for Revolver News, Beattie breaks down the Times "puff piece," which opens by describing Epps as "a man whose life has been ruined by a Jan. 6 conspiracy theory."

Beattie, providing a video compilation (embedded below) of Epps "orchestrating movements," wonders what Epps said in that text and whether it at least hinted as his motive for driving all the way to Washington to direct people into the Capitol.

See the video compilation of Epps at the Capitol:

Funny how often the term "right wing conspiracy" becomes fact, after the fact.
Explain why dozens of J6 protestors have rotted in jails, while he skated free.

What stands out to me is I don’t see anyone else laughing around him, or it doesn’t look like he’s engaged with someone off-camera. Which means he either told himself a spontaneous off-topic funny during a riot, or….

The video where the surrounding crowd starts yelling "Fed Fed Fed" when Epps eggs them on to the Capitol, just more fuel to the fire he was one of the main instigators of the biggest red flag operation in our country's history.

Bring this mf'er to the stand, under oath, and let the chips fall where they may.

This video is not new @mountaineer  .... It's been published since day one (even here) played in Congress and dismissed by the media.

The New York Times' bizarre reputation laundering of a January 6 "insurrectionist"

On a topic that has seen no shortage of awful reporting, one of the oddest January 6 related articles I've come across was published yesterday by the New York Times' Alan Feuer, a reporter who covers "extremism and political violence," according to his bio. With the web title, "How Ray Epps Became the Victim of a Jan. 6 Conspiracy Theory," Feuer recounts the story of Ray Epps, a January 6 riot participant who has become the subject of intrigue - and who I wrote about in detail in an October newsletter.

Epps is the "victim"? Feuer interviews Epps, who has fled his native Arizona for "the Rockies" and is essentially in hiding. He told Feuer he's looking to potentially file defamation suits: "'The truth needs to come out,' Mr. Epps explained, petting his dogs."

It's quite a quote from Epps, and the article, which seems to do everything possible to avoid the truth coming out. ...

Noticeably missing from the lengthy article is any reference to the Oath Keepers. If you've been following the January 6 committee hearings, you're likely familiar with the group, which has been referenced throughout and has become one of the most notable antagonists in the entire ordeal.  ...

Here's what we know about Ray Epps - one of these three things is true. 1) He was a president of the Oath Keepers 11 years ago, but wasn't on January 6, and on his own beginning the night before the riot he encouraged fellow Trump supporters to go into the Capitol, and then he ultimately wasn't charged with trespass because he explained the situation to the FBI a couple days later, and they just happened to decide not to charge him with a crime, unlike others who did the same thing. I suppose that's a possibility. 2) He was a president of the Oath Keepers, he was or wasn't associated with the group on January 6, and then his conversations with the FBI after helped lead him to go free - by perhaps turning on other members and helping the FBI prosecute the leaders that day. 3) He was a president of the Oath Keepers, on January 6 he was operating in that capacity, but he has some other association which is keeping him from prosecution and allowing him to enjoy puff profiles in the New York Times. ...
