Mother Shot in Head, Killed While Pushing Stroller on Upper East Side: NYPD Officials

A mother was shot in the head and killed while she was pushing a stroller with her infant inside on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, according to senior police officials.

The shooting occurred just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and East 95th Street, two senior law enforcement sources told NBC New York.

The gunman approached the woman from behind and shot her once in the head before taking off on foot on East 95th Street, sources said.

The mother was rushed to Metropolitan Hospital in critical condition, according to police sources. The child, believed to be just a few months old, was unharmed.

The young mom who was shot and killed while pushing her 3-month-old baby in a stroller on the Upper East Side was a domestic violence victim — and cops are looking to speak with the child’s father in connection with the slaying, family and law enforcement sources said Thursday.

The victim, identified by her mother as 20-year-old Azsia Johnson, texted relatives that she had been planning on meeting her infant’s dad on Wednesday night, according to the sources.

“She was targeted. It was a close head shot and there were powder burns,” a high-ranking police source said.

Johnson had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend in Jamaica, Queens, about six months ago while six months pregnant with his child, her heartbroken mom, Lisa Desort, told The Post.

Following the altercation, Desort said, the ex-boyfriend continued “stalking” and harassing her daughter. They called police for help, but he was not arrested, she claimed.

Mayor Eric Adams blamed the attack on an "oversaturation of guns," suggesting that the problem had reached "epidemic" status in the city.

According to the New York Post, 20-year-old Azsia Johnson was pushing her 3-month-old baby in a stroller when she was shot in the head at point-blank range on the corner of Lexington and 95th around 8:25 pm.  ...

"More guns in our city means more lives lost. It means more babies crying as those who love them lie dead," he wrote.

"We cannot allow this epidemic to keep claiming lives."

The mayor was called out for suggesting that banning guns would be effective, given the number of illegally obtained firearms circulating in the city.  ...

If the perp had a conviction of domestic violence, the answer is "NO". The perp could not legally have a gun.

The problem here is that people do not know how to deal with a relationship gone bad.
Just walk away. Easier said than done, but that's the answer.
Taking guns away will not cure the base problem of emotional immaturity.
No guns, and the same thing could have happened with a knife, 2X4, piece of pipe, and she could have been stabbed or brutally bludgeoned to death instead. The root problem is the inability to emotionally handle relationships and their demise i an environment that does not foster loving and enduring relationships. ("baby daddy/baby mama" nonsense instead of marriage). It's cultural, not just individual, and until the culture changes, the problem will endure.
