The mayor of a Texas town accused of trying to lure a teen for sex has resigned.
Pilot Point Mayor Matthew McIlravy, 42, who was charged last week with online solicitation of a minor under the age of 14, submitted his resignation Thursday ahead of a city council meeting, the Dallas Morning News reported.
McIlravy, a married father of two boys, was arrested Tuesday following a five-month undercover operation by Dallas police, the outlet reported.
The mayor, who took office just months ago, is accused of trying to meet up and engage in sex acts with a girl he thought was 13 years old, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by KTVT.
Pilot Point’s mayor pro tem will serve as the acting mayor following McIlravy’s resignation. He started a three-year term in May to head the Denton County town of roughly 4,000 residents, according to its website, which has removed his biography.
